Cyprus TV

Despite the pretty woeful standards of CyBC, I've known about their live internet feed some time as I like to watch the nightly news in English and like to practice my aural Greek by watching some of the programs, but half the time I end up missing them by not being around. Today I found a whole set of links hosted by Kypros.org where the daily news summary in English is available via a link (as is the main news bulletin in Greek and the news summary in Turkish also).

If anyone else doesn't know about this, you can find it at http://kypros.org/Real/

For any prospective expats, watch a bit of CyBC and you'll quickly realise why you'll need a satellite dish on arrival

cybc....what can i say about cybc....i hate it!!!it did offer a lot to cyprus during past decades but it failed completely to adjust to modern age!!!from where should i start, from the primitive studio decorations the telediffusion in the inernet that whenever a few more people log in it it goes down ,or the tv presenters that have been there from before i was born!!!!they fail miserably to show any commercial shows that will attract any viewers!the people that say the news they dont even have a computer next to them!and their website...oh my God,i bet in the neolithic era they had better websites!!!i really wonder why they still have the 2 tv channels.....

I think we have enough of that crap. The state channel should be devoted to educational and high quality programs instead.

For all its faults, I agree with Piratis... Cyprus TV is full of enough crap US sitcoms, it should be PIKs responsibility to 'inform and entertain' a la the BBC charter in the UK. Too often I'll log on and see absolute dross like 'Super Bingo' (which seems to go on for hours) or some dodgy soap drama. If any state funds supply the channel it should invest them in home-grown documentaries, dramas and investigative journalism. I just hope they don't go the BBC route and have endless DIY, home design and cookery shows.

The Cybc is funded mainly by the government. Without government funding the Cybc will collapse overnight. For years it had enjoyed a monopolistic statues and privileges which resulted in too much beauracracy and mismanagement. And this is the reason it was never opened to improvements and to change!

Even those that are employed by the Cybc receive extraordinary benefits compared to those employed by the rest (Sigma , Mega etc). Is there any special reason for this? No

Personally, I never watch CyBC (or any other local channel). They are all so PATHETIC :( :( :(

Even the news is what? 80% consists of each Minister repeating the same nothings every day, while as many other wannabes jostle in the background trying to get his mug framed in the shot. PATHETIC :( :( :(

I watch mainly BBC World, some BBC Prime, Swiss News daily, Euronews and at least 30 mins of Chinese CCTV per week (excellent documentaries), plus the occasional CNN. For Entertainment, the Mezzo channel has some good classical music from time to time.

While I was in the US I used to watch "The History Channel"

Is there any relatively low cost way to get that in Cyprus? I know Sky has it, but you need a huge dish to get sky and I don't feel like paying over 1000 pounds for satellite.

Is there any other cheaper satellite package with lots of documentaries?
