TALAT SAYS TC SIDE’S AIM IS TO ACHIEVE LASTING PEACE BEFORE NON-SOLUTION BECOMES PERMANENT

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that their aim was to achieve lasting peace before the non-solution on the island could become permanent.

The President’s words came at a reception hosted by the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce marking its 50th anniversary of establishment.

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer was among high ranking guests who attended the evening.

Speaking during the reception, the President said that he and his team were working in order to guarantee and secure the future of the Turkish Cypriot people.

He also said that the Turkish Cypriot Side was determined not to back out of the negotiations process or to give up working for a solution.

“Our goal is to achieve a lasting peace in Cyprus, one that will reunify the island before seeds of division are sown” he said.

The President also underlined the importance of the people’s support in reaching a political settlement.

Touching upon the global financial crisis, Talat said that the TRNC will overcome the crisis through the unity and cooperation between all segments of society.

Also speaking, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer expressed the belief that the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce will contribute to the development of the country’s economy.

Referring to recent calls made to the government by various trade unions and civil society organizations, the Prime Minister said that he was paying heed to their calls but added that the organizations also needed to listen to what the government had to say.

Touching upon the ongoing Cyprus negotiations process, Soyer said that the people desired a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus Problem.

For his part, the President of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce Hasan Kutlu Ince, addressing the two leaders, urged them to continue negotiating in a constructive manner and to refrain from making unnecessary statements that will lead to polemics.

Comprehensive negotiations aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus Problem are set to continue tomorrow.

A short statement read out at the end of last Friday’s meeting by the UN Special Advisor to Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the two leaders had achieved important progress on governance and power sharing.

The talks are expected to start at 10.00 am at the building reserved for full-fledged negotiations in the UN protected area in Lefkosa.

The next issue awaiting the negotiations agenda is the property issue- one of the most critical core issues of a comprehensive settlement- once this issue is closed.

The funny thing, Halil, is that you Turks stupidly translate the so-called "framework of the UN Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission and on the basis of UN parameters" to only mean the failed "Annan Plan;" whereas in reality they (UN parameters) can only possibly mean the UN resolutions on Cyprus, the UN Charter and International legality.

Cyprus peace talks today continued .
Following a private discussion that lasted for about 20 minutes the UN Secretary General Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer commented on the meeting and said today’s negotiaions resumed on the issue of the executive, the presidency and the vice presidency.

He also announced that the representatives and experts will meet under the auspices of the United Nations to continue discussions at that level and that the two leaders will meet again on the 22nd of October to continue further discussions on the issue of the executive, as a result of the discussion that would take place on Thursday.

Responding to a question, Mr Downer said that Mr Talat and Mr Christofias are continuing clearly to discuss the approaches they have to the executive that is the presidency and the vice presidency and how that would work.

‘Obviously they come from this with different perspectives, and obviously progress is inevitable in all negotiations, and it’s a process that must take place to work through the difference and that’s why the representatives are meeting during the week to help take that forward’ he added.

Responding to another question on whether he brought any proposals Mr Downer said the two leaders have been talking about their proposals that they submitted.

‘They have some common positions and they have of course been negotiated over the last few weeks and there is much that still needs to be negotiated. This is an enormous issue, which hasn’t been resolved for a very long time.’ He said

Pointing to the importance of giving space to the leaders, Alexander Downer said ‘you can’t expect them suddenly to agree on everything, on one day and the whole matter to be resolved, its going to take a lot of time.’

The UN Adviser concluded by saying that the UN will do anything it can to be helpful for the solution in Cyprus.

Nihao Kifeas,

when the UN parameters are mentioned does that mean all the UN resolutions against Turkey?

Or do the Turks have their own UN parameters they call TRNC?

I am confused because UN parameters have said Turks out of Cyprus, and people going back to their own homes. In other words end of the invasion and colonization.

So what parameters are the Turks talking about?

News from the Northern Cyprus.

TALAT BRIEFED POLITICAL PARTIES ON ONGOING TALKS PROCESS

President Mehmet Ali Talat briefed political parties represented in the TRNC Parliament today on the latest developments on the Cyprus Problem.

Speaking to the Bayrak TV after the meeting, the leader of the Democrat Party who earlier accused the President of being passive at the talks said that they had reached common ground with the President.

Explaining that he had conveyed his party’s concerns and sensitivities at today’s meeting; Serdar Denktas underlined the importance of establishing the reality in the talks that there are two democracies and two peoples on the island.

Pointing out there were many obstacles in the way for a solution despite President Talat’s optimism, the DP leader said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s demands were unacceptable, something, he added the President himself knew well.

Also speaking to reporters, the leader of the main opposition National Unity Party Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that they too conveyed their views and concerns regarding the ongoing negotiations process.

Complaining that the Greek Cypriot Side, in reality, did not want a solution to the Cyprus Problem, Ertuğruloğlu warned that the Turkish Cypriot Side should be careful in the face of Greek Cypriot attempts to achieve osmosis.

“We should not accept concessions that will lead to the assimilation of the Turkish Cypriot people just for the sake of a settlement” he added.
ORP Leader-Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avcı for his part said that his party supported the ongoing process on the island.
He said it was important to achieve a settlement acceptable by the Turkish Cypriot people, one that will safeguard their political equality as well as Turkey’s effective guarantee.

Also speaking, the leader of the Communal Democracy Party Mehmet Cakıcı said that they supported President Talat’s efforts to find a political settlement.

Reaffirming his party’s support to the ongoing process, Cakıcı said that it was too early to comment on the process, which he added was moving forward, even though it was at a slow pace.

Representing the main ruling Republican Turkish Party, the party’s Secretary General Ömer Kalyoncu said it was impossible for the two sides to agree 100% on all the outstanding issues; Kalyoncu said that the process will eventually reach a stage where both sides will need outside assistance.

INNOVATION AND DATA PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY CENTER OPENS AT NEU

An Innovation and Data Processing Technology Center has opened at the Near East University.

ERCAKICA: ‘WE NEED TO BE PRAGMATIC RATHER THAN ROMANTIC’
Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has ruled out claims that Turkey was the main obstacle in reaching a comprehensive settlement on the island.

Underlining the need for being realistic, the Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica has said ‘beautiful words cannot solve the problems; we need to be pragmatic rather than romantic; we cannot serve for the solution of the Cyprus problem by acting romantically’.

Speaking on BRT’s AKIS Programme, the Presidential Spokesperson stressed that it is an absurd approach to criticize and try showing Turkey as an obstacle in the way towards the solution of the Cyprus problem.
Ercakica explained that Turkey has made its support for the solution process in Cyprus and President Talat is now sitting at the negotiations table with this support.

‘The support comes from Turkey but the political responsibility belongs to the President’ Ercakica said.

Mr Ercakica said, if there is someone to be examined on the Cyprus issue, then this person is Mr Christofias.

He stressed the need for being constructive at the negotiations table as well as thinking positive and being locked into the target with the will for a settlement.

Ercakica added that conceptual, ideological or doctrine debates will not bring any benefit to the solution process, but harm.
Sending a meaningful message to the Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration- Demetris Christofias, Mr Ercakica called on Mr Christofias to put ‘companion’ expressions aside as President Mehmet Ali Talat is not the man he knew in 1980s.

Ercakica said the President’s philosophy of peace, solution, social justice, social development and public prosperity has not changed but he has gained different responsibilities now.

‘Mr. Christofias keeps using the word ‘companion’ with the aim of driving Mr. Talat into the corner and creating timidity over him. But this is not a constructive approach’ he stressed.

He also reminded that Mr. Talat became the President with a wide public support and there has been no change in his peaceful stance.
Speaking of the framework of the solution of the Cyprus problem- which he said is clear-, the Spokesperson stated that the world is expecting them to come out with a single existence and international identity at the end.

‘The goal is to form a structure of partnership within which the two sides will equally enjoy the right of self-determination and will not rule over each other. This is a goal we can reach with the presentation of good will’.
