Some of the EU states which did not recognise independence have experienced separatist unrest of their own, such as Spain with its Basque region and Cyprus with its Greek-Turkish division.

The so-called Greek Cypriot RoC follows the same political stance of her mom; Greece whether to recognize Kosovo or not. If her Hellenic mom permits, she will recognize Kosovo.

Serbia will never recognize an independent Kosovo, Serbian media quoted Serbian president Boris Tadić as saying.

Speaking at a Serbian military exercise in Novi Sad, Tadić said Serbia would remain committed to defending its rights to its own territory, using legal and diplomatic means instead of force.

"Serbia will never recognize Kosovo's independence and, respecting international law, its own legitimate interests, its integrity in Kosovo, will defend in the legal arena, in front of the International Court of Justice.," Serbian broadcaster B92 quoted Tadić as saying.

Tadić's statements come only three days before the first anniversary of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence.

Tadić said; "it is clear to all that Kosovo is no state. To our fellow citizens in Kosovo, we are sending a message that their state is taking care of them and their interests."

"Serbia is not a threat to anyone, but a partner and friend, a pillar of regional stability and security, and a democratic European country. Serbia is defending her interests solely by peaceful means and that is a policy we will pursue in the future as well," B92 quoted Tadić as saying.

Tadić added that European Union membership was a strategic goal for the country. He said Serbia has to cooperate with The Hague Tribunal, "because that is at present the only political condition for EU membership."

Hence the surprise electoral victory of the moderate Christofias last month. Symbolically, the first round of Cyprus’s presidential election, in which Papadopoulos came third and was therefore knocked out, took place on 17 February - Kosovo’s independence day.

There is a final lesson to be learned from this. Although Cyprus has much more justice on its side vis-a-vis the TRNC than Serbia has vis-a-vis Kosovo, yet it is Christofias who speaks the language of reconciliation and ‘Cypriot coffee’. Serbia’s leaders have never been able to speak in this way to the Kosovar Albanians; they did not speak of Kosovo and Serbia as lands that belonged alike to Serbs and Albanians, or speak of the fraternity of the two peoples. Christofias may understand something that Serbia’s Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and President Boris Tadic clearly do not: that if you want to keep your country united and prevent one of its peoples from seceding, you need to treat the latter as your fellow countrymen and women, not as the enemy.
