MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN TURKEY

Postby Tim Drayton » Sun Mar 29, 2009 8:11 pm

Any comments or thoughts on the municipal elections in Turkey? Some commentators were saying that if the AKP polls less than 40% this would point to a waning of support for the current ruling party. They are currently running at 38.9%, although there are plenty of votes left to count.

The expert on turkish affairs has spoken.

The elections are amazing, with 52% of the votes in AKP are leading, but they have lost nearly every coastal municipiality on the west, they are fighting by a 1% difference in istanbul, and 4% in ankara, MHP has made gains and DTP has basically stayed the same. THis is a very bad result for AKP.

The CHP did well on the Agean and Mediterranean coasts and in Thrace in the last general elections, so there is no great change there. I am glad to see the AKP polling slightly less well than forecast, but to get around 40% of the vote in the middle of an economic crisis is still pretty a respectable performance.

One interesting thing I note is that the CHP looks like regaining control of a number of municipalities in Istanbul from the AKP, for instance, Kartal, Maltepe, Sarıyer, Beyoğlu.

the richest districts of istanbul as well as the middle class ones were all taken by CHP, the ones where i wouldnt allow my dog to walk through were taken by AKP. Eitherway, AKP is leading by one percent there, if CHP takes istanbul tonight it will be a massive lost for AKP.
