I was never fond of sea snakes and had a sub sea contract in the Persian Gulf some years ago where at night the work lights seemed to attract every sea snake for miles direct to me. To say I kept one eye on them & one on the job would be an understatement.

I share a similar phobia to octopus Michael... suffice to say when I was snorkelling in the Red Sea off Eilat and a large octopus decided to come and have a closer look at me it was like a scene out of Jaws... I was up that beach in a second...

cannedmoose - I can sympathise however I trust you still enjoyed your aquatic forays.
An old friend ‘Alex Double’ ex Diving officer & Sub Lt. at HMS Collingwood left the Royal Navy & went to Eilat to service the needs of the growing band of Scuba Divers in the late 60’s. Before the days of hotels etc. Perhaps he is still there.
I have to admit however that I have placed small Octopus on my person to examine the power of their suckers in the past but do appreciate your apprehension. Another of the “avoid at all costs” on my list was what we knew as wolf eels. Evil looking creatures that congregated around sub sea wellheads 4/5 & 600 feet down in the Northern North Sea. Not nice. They resembled an evil, aggressive version of a cross between a conger and moray eel, I willingly and openly confess to being a coward of the first order where they are concerned – unless I happen to have some explosive & detonator to hand, then I am ever so brave!!

Michael, you've just mentioned my other sea phobia... eels. I've come across a moray once and that scared the hell out of me... just remember seeing two eyes in a hole moving towards me... eek!

As for wolf eels, I just looked them up and they look scary... just to bring back nightmares, I've posted one below... geez... you're a braver man than I being all that way down with those about.

Certainly not brave my friend, not in any way shape or form, but stupid - probably. I am afraid my computer skills are at about the same as a 5 year olds so cannot show you but somewhere in my collection I have an image of a diver feeding a moray from his mouth. This was taken at about 100 feet on the Medas Islands just a short distance off the coast of Spain at Estartit again in the late 60's. So I guess stupid is about right!

Ferry services to Greece resume this summer
By Jean Christou

LOUIS Cruise Lines and Greek company ANEK lines are launching a resumption of ferry services between Greece and Cyprus as a pilot scheme this summer, reports said yesterday.

Ferry services between Cyprus and Greece were suspended several years ago after violence flared in Israel. The service used to run from Piraeus to Limassol before ending in Haifa, and most of the demand for ferry services was from Israelis wanting to travel to Greece or take their cars to Europe.

However, when Israelis stopped travelling, demand from Cyprus was not enough to keep the services running.

Reports yesterday said a deal had been struck between Louis and ANEK to operate a ferry service on the Louis ship Princesa Marissa that will be part cruise and part ferry to Rhodes and Piraeus.

The pilot scheme will run until September and may be extended, depending on demand. Tickets can be one-way or return and according to Politis the service begins on July 17 and will also operate on July 24 and 31, August 7, 14, 21 and 28, and September 4 and 11 from Cyprus.
The ferry will depart from Piraeus on July 20 and 27, August 3, 9, 16, 24 and 30, and September 7 and 13, and from Rhodes on June 27, July 21 and 25, and August 4 and 8.

The deal was struck after months of discussions with the Greek government after the Merchant Marine Ministry sent out letters to maritime companies in order to gauge the interest of companies in the planned opening of a ‘motorway of the sea’ connecting Greece and Cyprus, the Athens News Agency (ANA) said last week.

The project is part of the European Union's Trans-European Transport networks (TEN-T) programme.

ANA said shipping companies were requested to express their interest ahead of a joint proposal that Greece and Cyprus are due to submit to the European Commission.

“Following the signing of a relevant memorandum of co-operation, the two countries’ political leadership has agreed on a budget of 15 million euros. To date, Greece’s ANEK Lines and Cyprus’ Louis Group have expressed an interest in the project. The seaway would be vital in terms of helping Greece and Cyprus upgrade their ports and in boosting commercial activity between the two countries,” ANA said.

Here you are MickKnipfler, hope it helps.
