ORGANIZATIONS ARE PROTESTING THE GOVERNMENT FOR PASSING A BILL ON THE INFLATION-LINKED SALARY INCREASES

26 organizations are holding a series of actions to protest the government for passing a bill for the inflation-linked salary increases to be made every six months instead of every two.

This morning, the organizations held a protest action in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in N.Nicosia.

The group waved placards and signs in front of the Prime Minister’s office protesting, what they called, the proposed government austerity measures which reportedly include the reduction from 6 times a year to twice a year of the cost of living percentage increases in salaries.

Speaking at the protest, the President of the Dev-Is trade union accused the government of breaking its promise not to touch gain rights of public service employees through imposed economic measures.

The Dev-Is President also warned of more strike action in the coming days.

Yesterday, the organizations distributed copies of a written statement in main cities and towns in the TRNC.

In their statement, the organizations called for tax changes, limitation of statutory decrees and a halt to new citizenships.
They also underlined the need to set a new minimum wage.

CYPRUS TURKISH PUBLIC SERVANTS UNION STAGES 4 HOUR WARNING STRIKE AT ERCAN

The Cyprus Turkish Public Servants Trade Union-KTAMS staged a 4 hour warning strike this morning at the Department of Civil Aviation at Ercan Airport.

The Union is demanding the government to withdraw the statutory decrees on inflation-linked salary increases as well as overtime wages.
All morning flights in and out of Ercan Airport were delayed due to the strike.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Communication and Public Works Hasan Tacoy criticized today’s action, claiming that the strike had been preplanned by KTAMs and that the demands put forward were only excuses.
