Terrorism in Cyprus, do you fear it?

Postby Sinister_Carnie » Wed Jul 13, 2005 10:53 pm

Recently I have had to do alot of research on the history of Cyprus and expecially terrorism. How much do you natives fear terrorism in Cyprus? Are ethnic tensions so high that genocide could take place?

Thanks for any info you could provide.

Ethnic cleansing already took place when the Turkish army "cleansed" 1/3rd of Cyprus from the Greek speaking population (the majority).

About terrorism, it depends on what definition you give to it. E.g. is terrorism only the Arabs blowing up buses and trains, or is it also Bush bombing and killing thousands of innocents?

We don't fear much from the kind of terrorism feared in the US, UK, Italy etc, because we never supported the criminal actions against the Arabs so I don't think they would want to target us.

However we fear the other kind of terrorists that are ready to crash anybody that doesn't obey their "new order" and that they decided to split our country and give half of it to their ally (Turkey) because thats what it fits their interests better.

So you do fear the superpowers? Thats actually the subject of my paper. Whether Cyprus is at risk of tactical terrorism (the sucide bomber type) or political football (West versus Middle East).

It is unfortunate that the U.S. ignored turkey's invasion in 1974. It was due to the interest in keeping Turkey a friendly member of NATO against the USSR. At the time the means justified the ends. The same is true of the mujahideen that the US equipped in Afghanistan. At the time it made sense to fight a proxy war against the USSR, but now it's biting us in the ass.

It does surprise me that you actually fear U.S. bombings of Cyprus. Do most of you have the same fear, or do you just dislike U.S. foreign policy?

We do not fear US bombings. Cyprus is an EU country and there is no excuse for anybody to do such thing. This is not the kind of terrorism we fear.

What we fear is that the US is way pro Turkey right now, and along with the UK and some others might force a "solution" to the Cyprus problem that will be the 99% of what Turkey wanted and a disaster for Greek Cypriots.

For example last year the "UN" prepared a "solution" plan to close the Cyprus problem in a way that suited the Turks. (see my avatar).

The US told us that if we don't accept this plan in the referendum a ton of bricks will fall on us. We still voted "no" in that referendum, and since then they are trying to find ways to punish us.

I can't argue with that. I've read that the GC per capita income is 20k+, while the TC is only 4k/person. Unification of the sides would probably dilute the GC quality of life. Not to mention the inflation of the TC voting population by turkish colonization. On the other hand, a few of my friends have turkish wives. After seeing them I definetly wouldn't mind a little unification.

Unfortunately Turkey is one of the few U.S. allies in the middle eastern region. We will probably continue to support thier agenda. Damned crude oil. Someone please invent an alternative fuel so we can quit pandering to the persian gulf powers. I am tired of being stationed in places like Pakistan and Iraq. I've tried to get stationed in Cyprus, but to no avail.

I don't expect there to be too many suicide bombings in Cyprus, like the recent London Attacks because Cyprus
tries not to take sides or stir the international shit. I think Cyprus is on pretty good terms with the Arab Countries as
well as Israel because of this. I think that Cyprus has been trying hard to improve relations with Israel lately but I do not
think that it is something that the Arab Countries object to. I think one of the good things going for Cyprus is that it is so
small and self involved that it isn't even recorded on some Maps. I mean I live in Darwin, Australia and half the people
here do not even know that Cyprus exists. I have to explain where it is using an atlas.

No, that was east/west germany, here our main problem is way more complicated. To make a long story short, the 18% of the Turkish Cypriot minority in Cyprus according to the proposed plan was supposed to get 29% of ground and 50% of power. On top of that, many of the Greek Cypriot refugees would not be allowed to return to their homes, and Turkey would have the right to intervene unilaterally in Cyprus. (=Banana Republic)

You are a soldier?
Where can American soldiers be stationed in Cyprus? In the British bases? Or in one of those secret spy stations?

Cyprus is a far safer place to get stationed. In terms of violence, except when the Turks shot some civilians in the head in 1996, nothing much has happened there for 31 years.Its frozen it time. You can get Big Macs and Fries at McDonalds, Pop corn chicken at KFC and a Wopper at Burger King. I Hope you manage to get stationed to Cyprus, just bring your mastercard coz its expensive if you don't know where to shop. Try to sample the following local delights:

1) Soujouko;
2) Sheftalies;
3) Machalebi;
4)pites souvlakia mixed;
5) Eastern European escorts;
6)Petra tou Romiou
7) very lazy ,slow moving over paid public servants
8) Everyones calls you koumbaro;
9) Troulous; and
10)Hunting with 5000 hunters to every one hare.
