Should I buy in Cyprus or import from UK

Postby mrterrific » Sun Jul 17, 2005 5:28 pm

Used cars seem kinda pricey in Cyprus. Would it be worth my while trying to import my car from the UK? I've heard a few horror stories relating to this - but mostly from second hand sources.

Thanks.

If you are coming here to work, do not import your car, if you are retiring and have owned the vehicle for over 6 months, it is slightly different it will not be subject to Duty although registration fees can be high . However, if you subsequently try to resell it, there may be a significant Duty liability - especially if it has a large engine.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not retiring, but will continue to work in the UK/Europe. My wife may work in Cyprus, but the car won't be registered in her name. Do you know how I can find out the registration fee, and any other information on this?

Thanks again.

What engine size? Then I will calculate Duty and Registration, also how old?

Hi City

I run a business here - and as a foreigner that is not always the easiest thing in the the world, as you can imagine.

A Cypriot friend had his two offices bombed last Thursday - I thought this was usually reserved for inter gang warfare in Limassol!

A British storage/moving company had its store building burnt down in an arson attack, three weeks ago.

I have many Cypriot friends, but when it comes to business, 'Queensbury Rules' get forgotten!

So, to get back to the point (!!) to survive and thrive here it is esential to be better than everybody else and that means knowing quite a bit about quite a lot!

Hi Aidy

IF you have to pay Import Duty on your car it would be:

£13,700 x 4/10 = £5,480 x 1.15 (VAT) = £6302

(£13,700 is the normal Duty, 4/10 as your vehicle is 6 years old and Duty is subject to a 10 year straight line depreciation), VAT is 15%.

Registration will be £1,500 and road tax about £260 ish.

Do similar registration fees apply on cars bought in Cyprus?

Cheers.
