I voted for England (despite the last 18 years) for three reasons:

1) England's bowlers finally seem to be able to take 20 wickets between them.

2) The English weather, which will hopefully help England out when the Ozzie's are on top.

3) Kevin Pietersen

Freddy is also good, and in particular he is someone who the Aussie's don't have, a destructive batsman who is also a front line bowler.
Problem with allrounders is doing both batting and bowling.
His performance in this test match was awesome, so maybe he should be my fourth reason. :)

I think Pietersen, however is England's best batsman, not just because of the stats so far but his performance in the county circuit and his perfomances in the short form of the game.

That's got to be a first, a GC who understands cricket... jolly good show old boy... :D

I spend hours trying to explain it to my GC relatives and then they still turn round and say that 137-7 is a good score.

I sometimes think I am the only one. I guess growing up just outside the KCCC ground in Canterbury also helped. :)

Not really a Cypriot sport, otherwise the Brits would have got us playing it. Just trying to visualise in my head some Victorian WG Grace type character trying to teach some unsuspecting Cypriot farmer to bat.

I know KCCC well as I went to University in Canterbury and spent many happy days watching the cricket there. Is the old tree still there inside the boundary or did they move it in the end?

As for Cypriots playing, it doesn't really lend itself to the Cypriot climate... batting for 8 hours in 40 degrees might be a bit dangerous. Although the image of a bearded English gentleman in large pants trying to teach a Cypriot farmer in his vraka is so quaint. All I know is that when I move to Cyprus, I'm getting a bloody big dish so I can still access Sky and Ch4.

The Canterbury ground is one of the nicest in the country imo.
The tree fell down in a storm last year, unfortunately.
What's really weird though is they are going to plant a new one in its place! How they managed to get the go ahead to host international matches there is beyond me.

It's because it's quirky and unique. The KCCC is the only cricket ground in the world with a shrub within the boundary rope so they developed the special rule that if you hit the tree, you'd get an automatic 4 runs... bit of a gutter if you're hitting it for 6, but if the ball trickles into the trunk of the tree and would otherwise have been stopped, you'd still get 4.

I agree, KCCC is one of the nicest in the country, very good to take a picnic along to and study with cricket in the background.

Yeah, I've never seen it happen, but apparently if a fielder catches the ball beneath the tree and the ball has even so much as brushed by a tree leaf it is not out and four runs. Crazy eh...also, only about three people have ever cleared the boundary directly over the tree to get six.

It would have to be some strike to have got it over the old tree, it was pretty massive.
