"Turkey is a peaceful country and they never invaded neighbors," said U.S. Ambassador in Ankara and the State Department spokesman rushed to the cover.

The American ambassador in Ankara, James Jeffrey, who allegedly made the above statement, added that Ankara has "security concerns in Cyprus and northern Iraq."

The State Department spokesman Mr Crowley, invited to comment on the statements of the American ambassador, said that he agrees with him, noting that Washington is"looking forward, notback."

In this context, Mr. Crowley, spoke of a "very constructive dialogue between Turkey and Greece, the Turkish Cypriot community and the Greek Cypriot community, which assist the United Nations.

He was pleased that the U.S. "play a role in this effort by helping to find a fair solution. And do not think that has value to you go back in history the past 35 years".

Times are changing. This is a new administration.

Jeffrey’s Cyprus remarks reflect Turkey’s opinion

From the Turkish Zaman:

http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/news- ... inion.html

A powerful Greek-American lobby’s harsh criticism of the US ambassador to Turkey over his recent remarks on Turkey’s Cyprus policy was raised during questions over US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s testimony to the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations during a hearing on foreign policy priorities in the fiscal year 2011 international affairs budget, on Wednesday.

The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) released a statement demanding that President Barack Obama recall Ambassador James Jeffrey, accusing the envoy of making “unacceptable, disappointing and damaging” remarks that “undermine the administration’s position on Cyprus.”

AHI complained that Jeffrey, in a recent newspaper interview, justified Turkey’s 1974 military intervention into the Turkish-Cypriot region in northern Cyprus in response to a coup engineered by the military junta ruling Greece at the time.

At the hearing, Democrat Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey recounted Jeffrey’s remarks that “[Turkey] has security concerns in Cyprus and in northern Iraq,” and remarked that Jeffrey “could not be supporting this reasoning which is introduced for keeping Turkish troops in Cyprus.” Menendez then asked whether asked whether Jeffrey’s remarks were “a slip of [the] tongue.”

In response, Clinton first stated that her department has been “heartened by some of the intense consultations … between the Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leadership,” noting however that “there is a long way to go.”

“And I think that, I can’t speak for our ambassador, but I assume that he was stating the opinion of the Turkish government. That is something that we do not ascribe to, because we want to see the entire Cyprus situation resolved, but we certainly understand that is the stated position of the Turkish government, not the American government,” she added.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton now states:

“And I think that, I can’t speak for our ambassador, but I assume that he was stating the opinion of the Turkish government.

Greek American lobby always on their toes. See how it goes my Cherikidian friends? So Jeffrey wasnt talking on behalf of the Obama administration. A clarification was made and he was only expressing the opinion of the Turkish government. A lesson for him i assure you all.

It was only a slip of the tongue. Going forward he will be more careful not to upset some of Obama's powerful constituents.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey made slip of tongue

http://news.am/en/news/15384.html

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey James Jeffry’s statement on necessity of Turkey's military presence in Cyprus reflected the position of Turkish government, not the U.S., Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated in Feb. 25 hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Turkish Sabah newspaper reports.

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez expressed bewilderment over the Ambassador’s statement saying it could be a slip of tongue.

Meanwhile, Greek lobby in the U.S. demanded that the U.S. President Barack Obama, Congress and Secretary of State recall the American diplomat accusing the envoy of making “unacceptable, disappointing and damaging” remarks.
