It's a core strategy of Assad that a much more repulsive and vulgar entity exists in Syria like Islamist State. He believes the US will be confronted with the dilemma of choosing IS or maintaining the status quo.

However, the problem being discussed right now, is the issue of being drawn into the Syrian Civil War. If the US attack IS in Syria, it could be drawn even deeper to fight the Assad Regime, but this will leave another power vacuum which could result in more extreme ideologues like IS.

Very complex problem.

What is a given is the fact that IS will be attacked by the US within Iraqi Borders. This will weaken IS in Syria as well but it will not defeat them. Other steps may include arming The Free Syrian Army. The Peshmerga are being assisted by the US and Iran.

Meanwhile, terrorist threat levels have risen to likely.

This is the real hope:

"We don't want guns from the Americans, we want a real political solution, which the US should impose on those people it installed in the Green Zone," said Abu Muhammad al-Zubaai, referring to the Iraqi political leaders who took over after the US-led occupation in 2003.

"The IS problem would end. If they guarantee us this solution, we'll guarantee to get rid of IS," said Mr al-Zubaai, a tribal leader from Anbar province speaking on behalf of the rebels, using a nom de guerre.

Yes it is true that the Iraqi Leadership did not govern fairly on behalf of Sunnis and Shia and when a State like this fails in such a way, then extremists like IS emerge. They need a strong political solution most of all, and if they fail at that then perhaps we need to come to terms with the fact that such nations are not ready for democracy and really require an iron fisted totalitarian leader like Saddam Hussein to keep everyone on a very short leash.
