I don't like your tone or sarcasm A.

I think the issue here is that you need to put to one side your own personal ideology, beliefs, perceptions and opinions and stop calling anyone a fascist just because you don't like the politics.

The guy has his own integrity and supporters, and I know he is not in Cyprus just so that he can make another entry into his extensive CV.

Definitely one of the most productive diplomats Australia has ever had! Compare his acumen to any politician in Cyprus at the moment and sadly, even an idiot understands there is absolutely no comparison!!!

Personally I can't stand the guy, as far as his approach to the Cyprus problem then all this island has seen is the UN envoy making one blunder after another....go from his approach with DEKO and EDEK to the trap he fell with Talat and Ban Ki Moon during the visit, to the leaked papers from his office....

The man has managed to piss just about every single person off and he holds a job where it it imperative to keep as low a profile as possible. The electorate is extremely sensitive to a bad solution and any inkling of favouritism by the UN envoy will be detrimental to the proposed solution and will give it a permanent stain.

Rather than stay low and just do what he's paid to do which is in fact to sort out a place with tea and coffee for the 2 leaders to meet, he decided to make his opening in Cyprus with statements criticising one party or another.

He's either an idiot or a paid saboteur.

What approach would that be?

I have spoken to him at length and the guy is very guarded.

The only thing I know is the identities of 2 out of his 6 secret advisers on Cyprus. And this gives me a lot of confidence because I know their views!

Well, he has pissed Marios Karoyian off. But Marios has pissed everyone else off including his own party which he betrayed!!!

As a matter of fact we have had a go at all UN envoys who were unlucky enough to be posted to this madhouse. Perez de Cuellar received most of the stick, for we discovered that he also had weaknesses of a personal kind.

So basically, most Cypriots are sceptical, paranoid, cynical and even scared about the negotiations and any initiative for peace because of the Annan Plan debacle.

That's what it all comes down to!!

There is very little AD can do about this. But his mannerisms have been quite polite and neutral in every interview he has given. Naturally, he is unable to reveal much and gives very vague answers as he would be under tight control by the UN in order to not jeopardize the process.

I can also tell you, that when he started, he honestly believed that some progress can be achieved, but those unrealistic, even naive expectations have now hit the floor, as reality has hit home. This is the man that liberated East Timor after all, so maybe he believed he can achieve great things in Cyprus as well.

His role in East Timor is the reason why the UN appointed him UN envoy for Cyprus!

Is he the only Australian politician to support the War on Iraq? What about the other side of the fence? We had 3 years of Labor rule, but they did not withdraw the troops!

Why is it that the US will withdraw in 2011, while Australia will be committing troops out until 2014 and maybe even further?

Do you have any evidence about his support of Turkish interests?

Perez De Cuellar was the Secretary General Bananiot, not a UN envoy.

No DT, he was, appointed (by Kurt Waldeheim) Special Representative of the Secretary General in Cyprus On 18 September 1975– a post he held until December 1977. On December 31, 1981, Perez de Cuellar succeeded Kurt Waldheim as Secretary General and was reelected for a second term in October 1986.

He wrote a book, DT, in which he says a few things about Cyprus. You should read it, despite written by a man with "personal weaknesses". While we are at it, can anybody name anyone that we approved of, from any international institution, that came to lend a hand?
