Postby Lit » Mon Oct 04, 2010 1:29 pm

Lets see...Israel was not allowed to take part in these war games....the US declined. That leaves Turkey looking east to China. How very interesting.

Turkish and Chinese air forces secretly participated in a military drill in Konya

bne - 04.10.2010

Turkish and Western military sources have told local daily Taraf that the Turkish and Chinese air forces secretly participated in a military drill in Konya as part of the "Anatolian Eagle" war games.

The sources told Taraf that the games took place but did not state the exact dates of the games or what kind of aircraft were involved.

Washington has requested information on the matter from Turkey, the Taraf report added.

Last year, Ankara excluded Israel from the war games, reportedly because of political tension that arose with Tel Aviv after the Israeli-led war in Gaza in January 2009. Since then all Turkish military exercises with Israel have been frozen due to the killing of nine Turks by Israeli commandos aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla earlier this year.

Since the early 2000s, Turkey, a NATO member, has conducted war games in the central Anatolian province of Konya with other members of the alliance or non-member friendly nations. But this year was the first time a military drill was conducted with China.

Turkey and China took their first step in military cooperation in the late 1990s with joint missile production, manufacturing weapons with a 150-kilometer range. bne

Clinton: Turkey will form new alliances

Former US President Bill Clinton said on Saturday that Turkey was the key country for the formation of new alliances in the world in the future.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and President Abdullah Gül of Turkey

“Turkey is opposing unjust treatments and it is fighting injustice. Under these circumstances, what Turkey is doing will pull us together like a magnate. You might be doing certain things your own way and you might think that you are not free but the most important role for you in the 21st century will be devising brand new alliances,” Clinton told a conference at İstanbul’s Bilgi University.

Clinton said he had always tried to defend Turkey in the country’s bid for European Union membership bid, adding that he had cited Turkey’s commitment in democracy and its role of a model country for the Middle East to show that religion and terrorism were different from each other.

Sounds like he's encouraging Turkey to look East. :D Much simpler, strategically, to keep all potential enemies to freedom and democracy in one area of the planet.

Were they pushed, or did they jump ...

Turkey invited China to join NATO air exercise

ANKARA — China was secretly allowed to participate in a Turkish-sponsored combat air exercise reserved for NATO allies.

Turkish sources said the Chinese Air Force sent several Russian-origin Su-27 fighter-jets to participate in the semi-annual Anatolian Eagle air combat exercise. They said the Chinese were invited after the United States and other NATO members had turned down an invitation to participate in Anatolian Eagle in the late summer of 2010.

"The United States immediately expressed its displeasure in private," a Turkish source said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has reportedly opened its airspace to Chinese warplanes taking part in joint military maneuvers with Turkey.

Ankara and Beijing conducted the drills in Turkey's Central Anatolia region last month.

The war games, codenamed the Anatolian Eagle, were the first involving Turkey and China. Turkey had previously carried out Anatolian Eagle maneuvers with the US and other NATO members as well as Israel.

Turkish F-16, Chinese Su-27 and Mig-29 fighter jets took part in mock dogfights during the drills.

The maneuvers come ahead of a planned visit by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to Turkey.

Chinese Su-27s Fly Mock Combat in Turkey
Posted by David A. Fulghum at 9/30/2010 10:29 AM CDT

An unexpected military cooperative exercise between China and Turkey has caught the eye of Washington-based analysts.

The two air forces were involved in a joint air exercise in the central Anatolian province of Konya, the first such exercise involving the air forces of China (People’s Liberation Army Air Force – PLAAF) and NATO member Turkey.

Part of the significance is that the PLAAF recently demonstrated major advances in long-range strike during their own “Peace Mission 2010.”

The latest joint exercise, “Anatolian Eagle,” in the past has been conducted jointly with the U.S. Air Force, other NATO air forces and the Israeli Air Force.

Ankara’s Zama newspaper reported that Turkish F-16s and Chinese Su-27s staged a mock dogfight. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao plans a visit to Turkey next month where several agreements on economic and cultural cooperation are expected to be signed. Chinese aircraft, including the JF-17 export fighter, stopped in Turkey to refuel on the way to last summer’s Farnborough air show.

Turkey flies 200 F-16s, 150 RF/F-4s and 75 F-5s.

Another sign that Turkey is changing its international stance is modification of its security policy to remove some of its neighboring countries from a list of those considered as national security threats and the exclusion of the IAF from its exercises.

Most importantly, Ankara has to improve democratic standards within the country to turn it into a respected international actor.

Efforts to broaden relations with China in all spheres fall in line with the policy of influencing world politics as a Muslim democracy, while underlining Turkish determination to advance its national interests, when necessary, independent of its close ally Washington.

Turkey has also recently modified its security policy and removed neighbors from a list of countries considered threats to national security.

The idea of holding bilateral aerial exercises with China was not a last minute decision, but matured over the past few years in line with changing Turkish perceptions of its security policies. The maneuvers also come just before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to Ankara on Oct. 8.

But the White House was irritated by the Turkish-Chinese aerial maneuvers. In addition, Washington has reportedly prevented Turkey from flying the US, Lockheed Martin made, advanced F-16s in its inventory during the training exercises with China, stemming from concerns that Beijing would have an access to US technology and collect intelligence to a certain extent. That explains why the Turkish Air Forces flew older US made F-4 fighters during the maneuvers and why the Chinese Air Force has reportedly used Russian made Su 27 as well as either Mig 29s or the older version of Mig 20s.

The US is also understood to have been annoyed at Turkey’s exclusion of Israel from the Anatolian Eagle exercises while holding similar maneuvers with China.

Turkish-Israeli ties further deteriorated after the Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara in May, during which eight Turks and one Turkish-American were killed. The vessel intended to break the Gaza blockade and supply goods on the vessel to the people of Gaza.

Turkey and Israel used to be close military partners -- with broad ties, including in the economic field. Military ties have sustained a serious blow following the raid on the Mavi Marmara.

Forging military cooperation with China is part of a Turkish policy of deepening its relations with many countries in the world. But in the midst of deteriorated ties with Israel and the Turkish exclusion of Israel from military maneuvers, Chinese-Turkish aerial exercises will likely send the wrong signals to Europe and the US.

The strong Jewish lobby in the US will inevitably use the Turco-Chinese military cooperation as a way of causing friction between Ankara and Washington. However, independent of such pressure, healing Turkish-Israeli ties would benefit both countries, in particular, and the Middle East more generally.

Commander of the Russian Navy warns of China's race for Arctic
Jorge Benitez | October 04, 2010
Russian Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky

From Guy Faulconbridge, Reuters: Russia will increase naval patrols in the Arctic Ocean to defend its interests against nations such as China seeking a share of the area's mineral wealth, the navy commander was quoted as saying on Monday.

Arctic nations such as Canada, Russia, Norway, the United States and Denmark are trying to file territorial claims over the oil, gas and precious metal reserves under the Arctic sea bed that may become accessible as the ice cap shrinks.

But in a rare public warning about China from Russia's top military brass, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky warned that China had already joined the scramble for a piece of "the Arctic pie".

"We are observing the penetration of a host of states which... are advancing their interests very intensively, in every possible way, in particular China," Vysotsky was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Russia would "not give up a single inch" in the Arctic.

"The ships of the Northern and Pacific fleets are continuing to increase their military presence in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation with new navy ships," he was quoted as saying by state RIA news agency.
