CYPRUS IN MOURNING

Postby MISSLONDONCY » Sun Aug 14, 2005 4:32 pm

All 121 people on board a Cypriot airliner are dead after it plunged into a hill near Athens after an apparent drop in cabin pressure.

A text message sent from the plane said that the pilots were unconscious and passengers were freezing to death.

Greek F-16 fighter jets were scrambled when contact with the Helios Airways plane was lost during the flight between Larnaca in Cyprus and Athens.

The whole of cyprus are in mourning.
Such a tragic loss, my thoughts are with the families of those who have died.

This must be the biggest tragedy for Cyprus since 1974. I am really shocked. Since Cyprus is such a small place when we find out who were the dead I am sure we will all have a family member or friend among them.

We hear about such accidents every now and then, but I must admit that when disaster strikes home it seems like 100 times worst ...

This is the website of the airline:
http://www.flyhelios.com/

For the moment they don't say much there.

It seems that this plane had problems before and it seems that we might even see people going to jail because of the accident.

I flew helios once, it was terrible, planes are getting worse imo, you simply *have* to travel in club class from UK to Larnaca, only way you can get decent leg room and some good service.

My wife's second cousin and her family were killed in the crash today... I only met them once, but it's a sad day for us all. I'm sure that most of Cyprus is in mourning tonight as most people will know, or at least know of people on that flight.

condolences to the families of those lost.

i dont like the fact though that news reports are calling it a Greece tragedy i must say.

is anyone aware of what went wrong exactly? there were terrorist speculations but im not sure about that. if im not mistaken though the plane was shot down to ensure that it did not crash in a populated area.
