"The Greeks in Croatia"

Postby yialousa1971 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:54 am

"The Greeks in Croatia", a report on archaeological findings testify to the Greek colonization in Croatia , hosted by yesterday at the Museum of the City of Ljubljana.

For the purpose of the exhibition moved to the Slovenian capital, under strict security measures and protection, Croatian Apoxyomenos the world-famous bronze statue that is closest to the original Lyssippou (4th century BC.).

The bronze statue of an athlete, height 192 cm, was recovered from the seabed between the island and Welle Orioule Losini the island in 1998. It is the largest bronze statue ever found in the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea.

The bronze Apoxyomenos is one of the most important examples of ancient Greek sculpture and one of the greatest archaeological finds of Croatia . depicts a Greek athlete at the end of a struggle to scrape away the body of the strigil, a tool that was used to remove the oil with who anoint the athletes. The statue has been moved only once, in Florence.

The collection, presented in Ljubljana, including 266 exhibits, including a bronze head of the goddess Artemis,

The report is divided into two parts. The first relies on a chronological map of the Greek colonization , and includes articles related to sea-anchors, amphorae and the Greek presence on the Adriatic coast, the islands of Vis (Issa), Korčula (Korkyra melena) and Hvar (Pharos). The second section of the report is devoted to understanding the ancient Greeks in the afterlife and presents artifacts found in tombs and artifacts related to mythology, religion and the arts.

The Giasminka Prokletski Stosits, curator of the Palace Klovits, which first organized the exhibition, said that although not over all the exhibits at the Museum of the City of Ljubljana, the finest selected to compose the report.

The Director of Museums and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana last Blazy said that the report is excellent because of the sensitive nature of art.

The report, under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture of Croatia and Slovenia, inaugurated yesterday the ministers of both countries, Giasen Mesic and raging Sirtsa.

Mr. Mesic's speech stressed the importance of the report because, as noted, the art of the ancient Greeks is a world heritage site, even though this collection is a limited time period and a region.

It is important that Croatia, due to the findings, he joined the "family" called the Greek art, that is part of the phenomenon, which we now call the cradle of European civilization.

Minister of Culture of Croatia thanked all the archaeologists and conservators who worked on the study and preservation of this cultural treasure and praised the cooperation of Croatia and Slovenia, carried out under regional initiatives.

The statue of Croatian Apoxyomenos or Apoxyomenos of Losini moved with real cinematic manner in Ljubljana, accompanied by a convoy of vehicles in which armed police officers aboard and anelkythike the second floor of the museum, with special machinery.

The statue is kept in a room with special equipment to maintain a suitable microclimate. During the exhibition, the space should not enter more than 15 visitors at a time so as not to disturb the necessary temperature and humidity and there are 24 security cameras for surveillance.

The exhibition "The Ancient Greeks in Croatia" , which will run until May 30, organized by the Art Gallery of the Palace Klovits, the Croatian Conservation Institute, the Institute for Protection of Heritage of Slovenia, Restoration Center and the Museum and Art Gallery of the City of Ljubljana.

Tragic irony. Foreign respect our culture and Hellenism, by extension. While we as Greeks were the first to preserve it, we do not. Especially here in Cyprus that some are ashamed to say that they are Greeks. Outside we see our leaders make up reports on Greek culture, unlike here where you fight to be Greek ...

There are 7 towns in Croatia next to or on ancient Greek settlements. It's all known.

You can also check Albacete(Άκρα Λευκά) and Elche(Ηλίκη) documentaries on how the population of those Spanish population reacted upon learning that those towns were Greek. (they have festivals, do Agora etc every year)

Didn't you know dog the Slavs invaded those areas, there where other peoples who lived in those areas before the Slavs came. It's just like England, before the Angles, Jutes and Saxons came the Celts were the inhabitants.

Of course I do. this was a reversal of an old Canard: the Southern Slavs mostly arrived in area in the 6-7th century AD.

What I do not accept is the view put about by some that the modern Greeks are descended from Slavs who learnt Greek: parts of the North of what is now Greece was occupied but by and large the inhabitants of Greece are descended from peoples who had probabaly been resident in the area for up to 10,000 years.
