Οι ίδιοι οι υποστηρικτές της δραχμής παραδέχονται τη χαοτική περίοδο που θα ακολουθούσε μια έξοδο από το ευρώ. Αυτό που αποσιωπούν είναι ότι η έκβαση αυτής της μεταβατικής περιόδου θα ήταν μια παρατεταμένη περίοδος υψηλού πληθωρισμού, ή ένα οδυνηρό αντιπληθωριστικό πρόγραμμα σύνδεσης του νομίσματος με το ευρώ, με χαμηλότερες προδιαγραφές επιτυχίας από αυτό που ήδη εφαρμόζει η χώρα μας μέσα στο ευρώ (και χωρίς τα πλεονεκτήματα της ισότιμης και πλήρους συμμετοχής στο κοινό νόμισμα). Μια έξοδος από το κοινό νόμισμα θα οδηγούσε σε υποτίμηση (ή διαδοχικές υποτιμήσεις) του νέου, αδύναμου εθνικού νομίσματος (ας το ονομάσουμε «νέα δραχμή»), που μπορεί να έφτανε σωρευτικά και σε ένα μέγεθος 50%. Αυτό θα μεταφραζόταν σε μεγάλη απώλεια αγοραστικής δύναμης και πραγματικού εισοδήματος για τους μισθωτούς και τους συνταξιούχους, σε μια χώρα που εισάγει ακόμα και βασικά τρόφιμα και πρώτες ύλες. Το κόστος της ενέργειας και της θέρμανσης θα αυξανόταν για τα χαμηλά και μεσαία εισοδήματα, και όλοι θα γίνονταν φτωχότεροι. Ολοι εκτός από όσους έχουν εισόδημα και κεφάλαιο στο εξωτερικό αυτοί θα καθίσταντο ακόμα πλουσιότεροι σε πραγματικούς όρους. Αλλωστε το βασικό πλεονέκτημα της υποτίμησης είναι ότι καθιστά φθηνότερες τις αμοιβές της εργασίας. Παράλληλα, η πραγματική αξία των καταθέσεων αποταμιευτών και επιχειρήσεων στις τράπεζες θα εξαερωνόταν. Μια έξοδος από το ευρώ θα οδηγούσε σε εκτεταμένη περαιτέρω φτωχοποίηση της ελληνικής κοινωνίας.
