Davidp, do you also know about electrical instalations?

Does changing a single electrical to a double, involve any more wiring or is simply a matter of replacing the back box and socket front.

Does the wiring in a new house in Cyprus use a ring main?

:P

Hi Steve
You should be able to change a single socket to a double as you described.

Look at the existing wiring to the single socket, you should have two lives (Red or Brown), Two Neutral (Black or Blue) and Two Earth (Yellow/Green sleeved); that would indicate that the socket is connected to a ring main.

If you only have one set of wires then the socket could be what is known as a 'radial'; a radial comes off the back a nearby ringmain socket and is usually used for low power applications (Light, tv etc.)

Generally modern installations are wired as in the UK with power circuits being ringmains.
