An Israeli fighter jet was downed by Syrian anti-aircraft systems as a squadron of warplanes violated the Syrian airspace

“At 2:40 a.m. this morning, a squadron of four Israeli warplanes violated the Syrian airspace through Lebanon near Al-Bureij area, and targeted an Army position near Palmyra in Homs eastern countryside,” said the official statement issued by the Syrian Army’s General Command.

“The Syrian Army’s air defense systems responded and managed to shoot down a fighter jet, damage another one, thus forcing them to withdraw,” the statement continued.

The escalation was also reported by Avijaa Adraei, spokesman of the Israeli Army, who tweeted that “while targeting several objectives in Syria, the Israeli warplanes were targeted by anti-aircraft missiles fired by the Syrian Army.”

Adraei pointed out that one of the missiles was intercepted by the Iron Dome and crashed in an area to the north of Jerusalem.

Israeli fighter jets have conducted several airstrikes inside the Syrian territories during the Syrian war. The airstrikes killed several prominent anti-Israeli figures from both Hezbollah and the Syrian resistance, and destroyed weapons destined for Hezbollah according to Israeli claims.

Israel threatens to 'destroy' Syrian air defence systems

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday threatened to destroy Syrian air defence systems after they fired ground-to-air missiles at Israeli warplanes carrying out strikes.

"The next time the Syrians use their air defence systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation," Lieberman said on Israeli public radio.

Israeli warplanes hit several targets in Syria on Friday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the strikes targeted weapons bound for Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement.

Syria's military said it had downed one of the Israeli planes and hit another as they were carrying out the pre-dawn strikes near the famed desert city of Palmyra that it recaptured from jihadists this month.

8)

"Our air defense engaged them and shot down one warplane over occupied territory, hit another one, and forced the rest to flee," the Syrian army said, apparently referring to the Golan Heights.

Syrian UN Envoy: Putin Sent Message to Israel That Its Freedom to Act in Syria Is Over

Russia has sent a clear message to Israel that the rules of the game have changed in Syria and its freedom to act in Syrian skies is over, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations said on Sunday night.

“Putin sent a clear message,” said Bashar Jaafari, speaking on Syrian television. “The fact is that the Israeli ambassador [to Russia] was summoned for a conversation only a day after he submitted his credentials [to the Russian Foreign Ministry last Thursday], and was told categorically that this game is over.”

Syria’s use of anti-aircraft fire against Israel last Thursday night has changed the rules of the game, too, Jaafari said, adding that Syria will not stand idly by in the face of an Israeli threat.

He also claimed that when the civil war began in Syria in 2011, opposition militia groups sabotaged the anti-aircraft defense systems belonging to President Bashar Assad’s regime, giving Israel freedom to operate.

In a separate incident, Syrian media reported Sunday that the commander of a militia fighting alongside the regime was killed in an Israeli airstrike around Quneitra, in the Golan Heights.

The Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen, which is associated with Hezbollah, identified the casualty as Yasser Assayed, a member of the national defense militia. A source associated with the Assad regime said Assayad was a commander in the Golan brigade, a militia of Druze fighters (from villages in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights) who are fighting with the regime.

Between Thursday night and Friday morning, Israeli fighter jets attacked several targets in Syria, triggering the most serious clash between Israel and Syria since the civil war erupted six years ago. In response to the airstrikes, the Assad regime’s aerial defense system fired several missiles at the jets. Israel’s Arrow anti-missile defense system was launched, shooting down one of the missiles north of Jerusalem. The incident forced Israel to admit for the first time that it had launched an aerial attack in Syria.

Following that, Israel’s ambassador to Moscow, Gary Koren, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry for talks with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov – again, an unusual development. Since Russian forces began operating in Syria in 2015, there have been a number of airstrikes that foreign media have attributed to Israel. But the Israeli ambassador had never previously been called in to clarify Israel’s actions.

It had to happen eventually as the Israeli attacks are acts of war as of course are any coalition attcks in Syria without the approval/consent of the Syrian Government. Remains to be seen whether Israel listens to the Russians or ignores them, which I think very likely. Then we will hear all the accusations of Russian/Syrian aggression against Israel.

For the last couple of days we have had Israeli F-18's (?) flying at high speed over Limassol as part of an exercise with the CNG.

RT has been covering the battle for Mosul as far as they can as many areas are off-limits and, in spite of Paphitis assurances that 'WE' don't bomb civilians, the situation in Mosul is even worse than it was in Aleppo and certainly on a much larger scale. The city is being flattened by the coalition air forces and hundreds of civilians are being killed and injured. RT has been comparing the coverage and the media 'dialogue' when it was Aleppo being covered and the almost total lack of coverage on the same situation in Mosul. Schools, hospitals and civilian areas are taking a pounding ........ but unlike Aleppo the Media don't have the White Helmets and SOHR to feed them with the videos, so there is little coverage of events! There is a marked difference in reporting! :x

Pity, after all his boasting about the coalition and his condemnation of Assad/Russian ‘deliberate’ air strikes on hospitals and schools, he is not still around to explain this one ….. and all the other bomb deaths by his coalition? :x

US Coalition Air Strike Kills 33 Civilians At Syrian School

Airwars, a UK-based organisation which monitors international air strikes against ISIS, suggested as many as 370 civilian deaths could be attributed to coalition raids in the first week of March alone.

Surely these are war crimes as the airstrikes not only targeted civilians but happened in Syria where the coalition has no mandate under the UN Charter to conduct military operations and was also a blatant disregard for International Law?
