Following Anastasiades' recent visit to Egypt...

Turkey, Egypt may fall out in east Mediterranean

Egypt is not the only country that Greek Cyprus [sic] has signed delineation agreements with. Israel, which is also at odds with Turkey, and Lebanon have also inked the same agreement.

Foreign policy experts believe that Turkey's room for maneuver will be narrowed if Greek Cyprus [sic] cooperates with Israel, Egypt and Lebanon in the east Mediterranean.

“Such an alliance in the east Mediterranean would definitely limit Turkey's sphere of influence. Egypt's cooperation with Greek Cyprus [sic] would be supported by the West as well. Therefore, this situation will put Turkey in a difficult position,” Beril Dedeoğlu, an academic at Galatasaray University, told Sunday's Zaman.

A senior Turkish official, who spoke to Sunday's Zaman on the condition of anonymity, noted that Turkey would experience great loss of influence in the region if Egypt's EEZ agreement with Greek Cyprus [sic] returns to the agenda. “We really have concerns over this matter,” added the official.

When asked whether Egypt may revive the deal with Greek Cyprus [sic], a senior Arab diplomat, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the Arab world has always enjoyed good relations with Greek Cyprus [sic], saying Egypt may bring back its close ties with the Greek side with the agreement.
