Following the resignation of three ministers implicated in the ongoing anti-corruption investigation from the AKP government, there were demonstrations in the evening (26 December) calling on the entire government to resign in a number of places, including Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir.

The police attacked demonstrators marching in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul, and there were 46 arrests. It is claimed that most of the arrested demonstrators were injured, they were beaten up and not taken to hospital. Even a 26-year-old woman said to be suffering from bleeding was not taken to hospital. It is said that those arrested were forced to sign reports compiled at the time of an earlier protest.

Lawyer Hande Kuday said, with reference to those arrested, ‘’We are concerned about the arrests. The youths, among whose number there are four high school students, have suffered extreme violence. A woman has also suffered severe bleeding after being injured by a policeman’s kick and is now in hospital.’’

In Ankara, the protestors were able to read a press statement in Güvenpark. About five thousand protestors assembled in Izmir. In Izmit, protestors marched from a central park to the AKP party building.

Police are reported to be intervening against hundreds of citizens in Taksim/Istanbul who have heeded the call of Taksim Solidarity to assemble there and protest against corruption. With the crowds chanting “There is a thief” and “Everywhere bribery, everywhere corruption,” the police are intervening using water cannons.

The police have apparently been unable to prevent a large crowd from congregating in the Taksim area of Istanbul to protest against corruption.
Protests are taking place in other parts of the country.

According to the protestors' internet TV station Çapul TV (http://capul.tv), protestors in the city of Mersin have just broken through a police barricade aimed at preventing them from marching, and are now marching towards their intended destination. They also report efforts by the police to clear Taksim Square in Istanbul, but also say that a further group of protestors is marching in the direction of the square.

19.45 Taksim. The police are trying to force the crowd in the square to move in the direction of Sıraselviler. The crowd is not dispersing.

The police have set up a barricade along Istiklal Street in Taksim to prevent protestors from reaching the square. Heavy clashes are reported there. The police are said to be using both chemical-filled plastic bullets and water with chemical additives against the protestors.
