Şişli Municipality, with the aid of a businessman who did not wish for his name to be revealed, has provided toilets for the protesters in Taksim.

From an article by columnist İhsan Dağı in the Zaman newspaper, affiliated to the Gülen sect and close to the Islamist regime in Turkey.

In truth, the AKP is having trouble understanding the Turkey that it has itself changed. By making connections between a social reaction and organisations and plots, it ignores the roots of the events. Up until yesterday, the AKP defended civilianisation, democratisation and pluralism in opposition to an approach to statehood which was authoritative, looked down on the people and attempted to cast them in an ideological mould. As the AKP has become embedded in the state, this discourse has passed to ‘others’. This is the crux of the paradox.

senator McCain's view

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Jun 07, 2013 2:41 pm

Republican senator McCain, speaking yesterday:

http://en.trend.az/regions/met/turkey/2158852.html

Speaking at Brookings Institute on Thursday, McCain, a staunch backer of a US intervention in the prolonged Syrian crisis, said there are more journalists jailed in Turkey than any other country in the world.
Speaking about a wide array of issues, especially about the current conflict in Syria, McCain said Erdogan is seen as a dictator in the eyes of many Turks.

Yesterday evening was apparently also eventful in the notorious Gazi Quarter of Sultangazi/Istanbul, a neighbourhood populated by Turkish, Zaza and Kurdish-speaking Alevis largely from the east of the country.

It seems that they set up barricades of tyres which were then set fire to and police vehicles were attacked with molotov cocktails.

I personally think that this is a shame given that these demonstrations have for the most part and in most places been characterised by a spirit of non-violent, passive resistance.

The demonstrators have been pushed into this. They have been made to fight fire with fire.
These are early days yet, once the Erdo supporters take to the streets, that's when the real blood shed will have and it'll be the beginning of the end of Turkey.

I guess whoever controls the army will come out victorious. Time will tell. For us here in Cyprus, it maybe the change we have been waiting for!!!!

Alleged behind-the-scene developments

Postby Tim Drayton » Sat Jun 08, 2013 2:25 pm

It is alleged that, since yesterday, government ministers at below deputy prime-minister level accompanied by Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, Kadir Topbaş, who is from the ruling AK Party, have been conducting behind the scenes talks with various people representing the protestors with a view to laying the ground for a definitive resolution of the affair.

It may be that Erdoğan’s public pronouncements since his return from Africa do not fully represent what is going on.
