So basically your side is trying to force their demands on the other side?

Well that's like a criminal complaining to a judge that the judge is trying to force his demands on him.

The communique is designed to keep the Turkish Cypriots from straying outside the international legal framework.

Hello who made your side judge, you probably expect to be the jury as well. Hasnt anyone bothered to tell you lot that you are just one side to this dispute and you are EQUAL not above the other side who will no longer be dictated to you. You want to get your demands rubber stamped even before negotiaitons start, then why the hell do we need to sit around a table to negotiate? you have decided how the solution will be by yourselves and are trying to ram it down our throats, no one side to dispute would even contemplate negotiating with such a fascist mentality...thats why the talks have not started.

Correct. As representatives of the legally recognised Republic of Cyprus it is our duty to uphold the sovereign rights - under international law - of the Republic. We therefore cannot have a ‘solution’ that would violate international law and undermine our sovereign rights under the UN and the EU.

That is why there can be no talks without a commitment from both sides to uphold the sovereignty of the Republic. This is non-negotiable.

for all Greek Cypriots....let it be known that Eroglu is actually from Turkey and not a Turkish Cypriot, but of course your President already knows that! In other words, a joint statement means nothing without an overall agreement covering the main essentials of the Cyprus issue; Guarantees based on the original Zurich agreement, A Bi-ZONAL, Bi-Comm Federation, and the Equality of both the TWO main PARTNER communities of the ORIGINAL Cyprus republic.....which of course no longer exists!

FH, you should know that MrH is an extreme Turkish Nationalist and hard line TMT. He does not believe in a united Cyprus, but a Turkish one.

"Intransigent Eroglu Refuses Joint Statement"

I love that term above. It's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place with the Cyprus issue, which is why it will end in stalemate.....another 40 years of non-agreement and a majority Turkish population of the island peering through the sunset.

Talat: Single sovereignty should be included in a joint statement...

Talat: Single sovereignty should be included in a joint statement

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (05.12.13) reports that former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the principles of single sovereignty and single citizenship, which cause difficulties for issuing a joint statement that would lead to the resumption of the Cyprus negotiations, must be included in the joint statement.
Kibris writes that Talat said that the single sovereignty and single citizenship were for a long time among the main principles in the Cyprus negotiations and added that this is reiterated in the UN Security Council's Resolutions on Cyprus.

Referring to a statement made recently by Foreign Minister Kasoulides that "if Talat was in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community we would not feel the need for a joint statement", Talat noted that this statement might have been made because of the lack of trust towards Eroglu and because he [Talat] had accepted the principles of single sovereignty and single citizenship in the negotiations. Talat said that when it is said "let us declare single sovereignty and single citizenship", this should be accepted instead of being rejected or watered down.

Noting, however, that he respects Eroglu's stance, Talat said, inter alia, the following: "The biggest responsibility for launching the negotiations belongs to the Turkish Cypriot side. We should want more than anyone else the solution of the Cyprus problem. This is at the same time a responsibility towards the Turkish Cypriot people. Single sovereignty and single citizenship should be included in the joint statement. If the negotiations will start, a way should be found and reference should be made to this issue. We should in no case create the impression that 'we want two separate states or the partnership of two states which have separate sovereignty'. This will present us negatively in the world?"
