The hurriyet reports that the government has tightened the noose. Instead, The Erdogan Government has blocked access to Google public DNS service, too. The government is trying to stop people bypassing the twitter ban.

Sms is another way Turks are bypassing the ban to tweet. Will the telephone companies be ordered to implement barring controls next?

US State Dept joins in the criticism of the Twitter blocking in Turkey with this statement on their site...

"... The United States supports freedom of expression in Turkey and opposes any action to encroach on the right to free speech. We urge the Turkish Government to unblock its citizens’ access to Twitter and ensure free access to all social media platforms.

An independent and unfettered media is an essential element of democratic, open societies. Today's shutdown of Twitter is contrary to Turkey's own expressed desire to uphold the highest standards of democracy.

We have conveyed our serious concern over this action to Turkish authorities. ... "

... and one US State Dept Official goes further in an Official State Dept Blog with the headline...

21st Century Book Burning

"... Every day, governments around the world devote precious resources to Internet censorship. It is 21st Century book-burning -- and it doesn’t make anyone stronger. This brand of suppression affects all of us: In an era in which the Internet serves as the world’s community forum, censorship anywhere is a threat to freedom of speech everywhere. ..."

The Twitter Ban has also brought a call for the suspension of the Turkish EU Accesion talks...

"... The vice-chairman of the Liberal Group in the European Parliament, German MEP Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, called for the suspension of accession talks following a Twitter ban in Turkey. Lambsdorff, who is also his group's shadow rapporteur on Turkey, said that negotiation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is no longer necessary.

Speaking to Today's Zaman, the German Liberal said: “I am asking for the suspension of the accession process. Media freedom is a core European value. If Prime Minister Erdoğan fails to understand that, there is no point in negotiating with him anymore. The EU must continue to engage with Turkish civil society helping it to defend basic civil liberties...”
