You were all the first to hear about this on CF when I spilled the beans before Christmas last year.

Well, it's happened! Downer has resigned.

Now just wait for the announcement of his new appointment in Australia's top Foreign Affairs job outside Foreign Affairs Minister! He is headed for Washington to become Australia's Ambassador to the US ... :lol:

So farewell, Mr. Downer. Never really understood the issues. Never understood his responsibilities. The miracle is he lasted so long.

I thought he was off to London next to be UK ambassador. Well out of harm's way!

I think he is moving on to better things. Probably had a enough also.

Oh and btw, he understood the issues very well. He had a great team of people working for him in Australia with regards to the Cyprus issue and one of his biggest advisers was in fact a CYPRIOT (a refugee from Rizokarpaso) who is very VERY passionate about the Cyprus Issue. Another is a Russian Diplomat. I was privileged to meet them all, and that gave me a lot of confidence.

Great bunch of guys too!

He really loves Cyprus. His inner passion was to try and break the dead-lock and re-unite the island like he liberated East Timor (through war mind you). Cyprus and East Timor! I think he came to the realization that this is not possible, at least for now, so he moves on. After East Timor he thought he would do the same for Cyprus. This was his goal and motivation.

He's off to Washington mate! He's gonna be smoozing with Obama! :lol:

I think Cyprus will have a useful ally in Washington who also has the attention of the US. Really should use him for all its worth. :wink:

I think this is utter bollocks. He was on Turkeys payroll oneway or another and attempted to force things on us, but then soon realised he had fucked up.

No tears shed here and he can bugger of to the US or anywhere the hell he wants to go. I have NEVER had any faith in him.

There was a wikilieaks cable which had Downer venting to a US Diplomat about the UN and EU whilst he was Envoy!

He called the UN and EU "fucking useless". Check it out and do a few searches!

He had a genuine desire for a solution and at times found the UN as unhelpful even.

He was not on Turkey's Payroll. He is quite Rich enough already.

We have a bunch of nincompoops in Office. All our politicians are just not intelligent enough to behave in a diplomatic manner and create the friends we need abroad and motivate them to take a positive role. We only rely on Geopolitics alone.
