“The United States - and I want to be clear on this - recognises only one legitimate and legal government of Cyprus,” he said, adding that his visit would not change that. “This is the position of the entire world,” said Biden.

“I wanted to come to primarily underscore the value the United States attaches to our growing cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus. This relationship is now a genuine strategic partnership which holds great promise.”

"A strategic partner"....a huge statement to make, never heard that one before with regards to Cyprus. Is this a prelude to Cyprus joining NATO?

Could be. This is a serious upgrading of the ROC and something unthinkable under Christofias. There are two things going on. First is Cyprus abandoning its policy of non-alignment. Second is the US realising that its policy of a divided Cyprus is not in the West's interest.

What the GCs have sold to the Americans is the prospect of a united Cyprus being a strategic partner to the West and an influential player in the region. Gas discoveries have made this possible.

But for this to happen then Turkey must be persuaded to withdraw from the island. Biden's visit is hopefully proof that the US have taken this as a serious objective.

The two powers are coming to court Cyprus…

The first power because it wants to kill the trading partners of the second, and the second because it wants to secure its trading partners and obstruct the plans of the first.

In the midst of this high level power struggle if Cyprus is smart it can achieve everything it wants and more!

Had I been the president of Cyprus my message to both powers would be direct and very clear:

“He who liberates Cyprus and rids this island of Islamo-fascism once and for all, secures its liberation and hydrocarbon supplies long term from the enemy, and forever puts an end to Turkish separatism shall control the hydrocarbons!

How you achieve this is not our problem and when you should achieve this is YESTERDAY, so have a pleasant stay in Cyprus and do let us know when you’re ready asap before the other side is ready!”

Will he cross the border into the north to meet Eroğlu?

If he does it would be to please Turkey by pretending to go along with the Turkish charade and certainly not because the US considers Eroglu a power-broker of any kind! :)

You need to be realistic about the situation on Cyprus… without Turkey’s support the “TRNC” would collapse and fold by the end of the month if not week.

Hes off to the occupied areas as we speak,

As he said yesterday, he personally recognises the legitimate RoC, and nobody is going to change his mind on that. I think that's a two finger salute to Eroglu and the TRNC before he even crosses the buffer zone.

Greek Cypriot community tomorrow and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community the following day.
The US, I want to be clear about this, recognises only one legitimate Government of the Republic of Cyprus. And my visit and meetings throughout the island, will not change that. It is my personal position, it is the position of the United States of America and it is the position of the entire world, save one country.

Biden’s message in the visitors’ book:

“Mr President, it is such a great pleasure to be with you and to be in Cyprus. Your effort to reach a settlement, bizonal, bicommunal settlement, is very much appreciated. But, your effort to improve and strengthen our strategic interest is also very much appreciated and will only grow upon reaching a settlement. We appreciate you.”

Biden has agreed to see Eroglu on strict terms laid down by the RoC. He will be seen in a bare room without any flags or ceremony. US officials will check two hours before the meeting that Eroglu has adhered to these terms. If he tries any funny stuff the meeting will be off.

The message is that Eroglu is leader only of the Turkish Cypriot community and not of the 'trnc' which the US refuses to recognise.

Eroglu is reportedly unhappy about the visit but has been told by Turkey and the US to behave himself.

I imagine Biden will give Eroglu a message that the 'trnc' is a dead duck and not to create trouble for American interests.

...it would be nice if there is a Cypriot Flag, in the photo of Biden and Eroglu, that will surely be taken.
