Joe Biden to Visit Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Just a quick reminder to Cyprus’ temporary Turkish separatists:

"International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, one government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states.

It is also normally understood to be a state which is neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state."

In case they are getting overly excited again… :)

“The United States - and I want to be clear on this - recognises only one legitimate and legal government of Cyprus,” he said, adding that his visit would not change that. “This is the position of the entire world,” said Biden.

“I wanted to come to primarily underscore the value the United States attaches to our growing cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus. This relationship is now a genuine strategic partnership which holds great promise.”

"A strategic partner"....a huge statement to make, never heard that one before with regards to Cyprus. Is this a prelude to Cyprus joining NATO?

Could be. This is a serious upgrading of the ROC and something unthinkable under Christofias. There are two things going on. First is Cyprus abandoning its policy of non-alignment. Second is the US realising that its policy of a divided Cyprus is not in the West's interest.

What the GCs have sold to the Americans is the prospect of a united Cyprus being a strategic partner to the West and an influential player in the region. Gas discoveries have made this possible.

But for this to happen then Turkey must be persuaded to withdraw from the island. Biden's visit is hopefully proof that the US have taken this as a serious objective.

Since the Eu has no faith in Russian gas anymore, opening up the gas wells of Cyprus gives the euros lots of leverage. How can turkey grow its economy when they can't trust the Russians and Cyprus is not recognized by them? Do they pay for gas through third parties ( which makes it uncompetitive) or do they buckle their knees and get out of Cyprus ?

Early pictures of the meet show no flags... just a red carpet.

...quite a step down; pity it was not Eroglu that insisted on the Cypriot Flag to fly along with the American, beside them, the flag of the Constituency he is representing. lucky for him that Biden did not insist on flying his Flag(s) so to speak, many perhaps, but two above the rest.

I think that keeping his sunglasses on, says rather a lot.

You can ignore rather a lot by someone you don't like, wearing shades!

A vast contrast. No smiles, back to everyone, shades.

Compared to smiles, salutes, handshakes, hands on shoulders, niceties, music.... Relaxed body language.

Nope, Defo didn't fancy being at the Playboy mansion of Eroglu.
