Odd experience in E&S with bank notes

Postby mrterrific » Sat Jan 07, 2006 8:44 am

Two people I know have had odd experiences with bank notes in E&S in Limassol (the supermarket near Ayia Fylaxia roundabout). They both (independently) had what appeared to be good notes refused. One of them insisted on seeing the manager to find out what the problem was (expecting them to be counterfeit). The manager was pretty rude, but unwilling to explain the problem. After pressing him, he eventually pointed to 5 blue digits printed on one of the notes, and said they had been used in the north. Both the people had got their notes from a nearby ATM. Anybody else encountered this?

I would suggest you to give a call to Cyprus Consumers Organization - http://www.cyprusconsumers.org.cy/index ... 1&ctype=bm
Also the good way to calm down the manager is to tell him that you are recording the conversation and ask for his name and position.
He have to explain you the reason of the notes rejection and show the document which regulates the acceptance of the notes. He can't reject your payment just because owner of supermarket doesn't want to see notes came from the North.

But what kind of notes are these? Are they pounds left in our banks in the north during the invasion? If they are just regular pounds then how they can come from north? Only RoC prints those :?

The Turks stamp the notes they use? I think you are missing part of the information. Something must have been wrong with those notes. They wouldn't do like this for nothing.

Thanks for the responses. The notes were recent notes, just normal £10 Cyprus notes drawn from a Bank of Cyprus ATM. One of the people involved is going to her bank on Monday to see what their view is on this. I'll post the results of this to the forum.

I believe the notes are Cyprus pounds that have been used in the casinos in the northern site. Turkish put a stamp on the notes, sometimes blue sometimes red.

I think i heard that Cyprus Central Bank will refuse to accept Cyprus pounds with the stamps on them.

You know that is illegal to write on the bank notes right?

Funny you mention this.

This happened to us over the weekend at Teepee Bar. They refused to accept the note since it was stamped.

Apparently this has also happened to a few mates of mine as of recent as well.

But how did they get in the BoC ATM then?? Apart from that, no matter if you have written or stamped on them they are still legal means of payment.

The bank or anyone else has no right to refuse them. And if they don't want them to be circulated anymore , well, then they have to replace them.
