I did a DNA test. suprising results.

Postby lonewolfcypriot » Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:10 pm

I did a DNA test for ancestry.com
My results:
38% Middle East
35% Turkey&Caucasus
25% Italy
2% Subsaharan Africa
Surprisingly I scored 0% Central&Northern Asia unlike mainland Turks. I hear that these are quite normal results for TC's.
If anybody else has tried a DNA test and if you wouldn't mind sharing your results than that would be great.

Zero Neanderthal?

- Did you do it through Ancestry DNA and not 23&Me?

Do you know which are the best ones? Personally I am interested, but I don't know if giving away my DNA like that could somehow hurt me in the future.

Hi Sotos

I changed my post because I saw that he had mentioned using Ancestry DNA.

I would not recommend this one. We have done both. The most comprehensive is 23&Me. But, I guess, it's useful to have both for comparison.

Ancestry DNA is very USA-centered - it gives you migrations to the USA from 1920 for example, and indeed, it did find one of my relatives there. With this one, 80% of my markers centered over Greece (mostly southern) and over Cyprus. Few scattered around Asia Minor. No African.

With 23&Me, the classification was over 95% European (Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Scandinavian) with about 4% undetermined.

You can do either of those companies if you want (AncestryDNA is cheaper but spams you constantly), and then submit your raw data to some other company (can't remember details - can get) that does the most comprehensive migrations for around £10.

P.S. - 23&Me does/did mitochondrial DNA separately, and for men indicates Y chromosome migratory markers separately too. Ancestry DNA doesn't/didn't separate the mitochondrial DNA (maternal line).

As for giving up your DNA, they have so many ways of taking it anyway.

There is no Cypriot category

Not quite, mainlands Turks usually score 50%+ Turkey/Caucasus and a minor amount of Central Asian admixture. Additionally, Turkey/Caucasus pops up in Greek Cypriot results as well.

Hey,

Was it 23andme or another brand?

Contact me if you want to know more on how to analyse your results.
