You realise there are 167 other countries in the world don't you? Some of them are actually quite big and successful....

...and you realise that we aren't going to 'abandon' the EU trading block don't you? We'll still sell them our stuff and we'll still be buying German cars, washing machines, French wine and cheese, etc.

...and you realise that people have been travelling abroad and living and working abroad for years and years don't you? It isn't a unique feature of the EU.

Lastly, if you looked further afield for your 'news' you'd realise that there are significant problems within parts of the EU. Not least, high unemployment, stagnant growth and a huge tidal wave of anti-EU sentiment spreading across the block.

Turkey was an invader it never belonged to them. Then we had the pseudo UK BS independence (that was doomed to failure) and the RoC became to sole owner of Cyprus. Those lands are titled to GCs historically and they own it. The British, if they want out can just get the F out and return their so called SBA to its rightful owners. I normally stay out of Cyprus problem discussions ..... for the very reason that I know little about it!

But your historical time line is questionable! Turkey in Law would be the rightful previous owners of Cyprus, who ever happened to own the land. I own my land in Cyprus but it does not make this 1600 sq.m British territory!

Cyprus was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1573 to 1878 (300 years) when it was then rented to the British. On the 5th Nov.1914 it was annexed from Turkey by the British and remained a British Territory until independence in 1960. Before the Ottomans it was occupied by the Venetians (?) but an independent State of Cyprus had never existed until 1960.

The British Bases were just part of the Independence Agreement. Within the space of 14 years and with a lot of internal hostility and animosity during those 14 years the government eventually screwed up, crossed a red line for the Turks and you lost 37% of the Island. NOT a smart move!

So, if the UK decided to quit Cyprus it could justify in Law, giving their base areas to any organisation it wanted to, including back to Turkey! The bases are SOVEREIGN .... they belong to the UK not Cyprus and however galling that may be ....... Arch. Makarious signed them away.

By your reasoning Turkey could have a claim on Greece. Also do not forget tthat Turkey relinquished all rights over Cyprus with the Lossaine treaty after the 1st WW.
The Independence granted to Cyprus in 1960 was doomed to fail and the British were well in tune, after all they, the British , considered Cypriots as bloody terrorists
, unlike the Falklanders , the Cypriots did not have the right to chart their own destiny.
