It doesn't surprise me.

Erdogan was recently just promising economic reforms and a human rights action plan for a more democratic Turkey.

Instead, he sends the lira tanking with the kind of volatility not seen in the last 20 years

Tries to eliminate the pro Kurdish party and withdraws the country from the Istanbul convention on combating and preventing violence against women..

I know by now that what he says and what will end up happening are juxtaposed.

As if the people haven't ended up suffering enough hardship under his regime, as part of his economic reforms, he is going to try to usurp all their so called "under the mattress" gold to support his failed economy.

When are Turks going to wake up and get rid of this man?

I think this is more than just the economy, considering that only few days ago the rates went up by 2% and the lira was appreciating, then Erdogan got rid of the bank chief over the weekend and this happens. I wonder if the West is making their moves to really tank the Turkish currency to help get rid of Erdogan.

I think Erdogan is doing that all by himself.

I think the countries predicament is quite simple,

Erdogan spent (and embezzled) more money than the country earned. Furthermore, he eroded the rule of law and human rights which created the kind of environment that repelled foreign direct investment.

For the last two days now, both the online Turkish propaganda newspapers Hürriyet Daily News and the Daily Sabah have been MUM’s the word on the depreciating Turkish Lira. I guess if you don’t talk about it, it never happened.

Well, initially it was a 15% drop. Perhaps had it stayed at that rate, they might have bothered to say something like, “Oh, it is not as bad as it could have been, but hey look, Erdogan is a great president”.

Wasn’t Erdogan trying to convince the EU to dump the €URO few years back and use the Turkish Lira instead?

This must hurt those in the north earning TL and all those living in Turkey.

The wise ones converted to USD, Euro, GBP, gold or the Turkish stock index long ago.

I am just wondering when the wheels are finally going to fall off. Erdogan has hidden the shit he has created very well so as not to acknowledge or realize it until now.

He is hoping he can keep the wheels turning until the 2023 “centennial” elections. :D
