A very nice bloke. I met him once and it was a good evening. Very little said about this forum actually. I recall his wife was unwell shortly after and hope that wasn't the reason for his sudden departure.

Like Tim Drayton, a good member now missed (although we disagreed on most things. :D )

Already an EU member state, Turkey would be in a shitload of problems when Greece/Cyprus invokes NATO’s Article 5, especially after Turkey not going along with NATO and the EU to close it’s airspace to Russia or join the sanctions.

I don’t think one NATO member can invoke A5 against another. That would seem a bit ridiculous. :?

But I agree Turkey wouldn’t likely want to attack this side. They’d have, at the very least, a perpetual state of insurrection on their hands. Not to mention joining Russia as an international pariah.

Well, yes, it would not be a unanimous to invoke A5, but Turkey would give NATO a good reason to remove her from the alliance for attacking another NATO member unprovoked......maybe!

So, NATO removes Turkey ............................ so they can attack it? :?

It's not going to happen. I suspect they're hoping that Erdogan will be a passing phenomena and there will be a return to a more western looking government. Either way, I think your idea that Cyprus votes for Enosis and gets into NATO by Greece fiddling the books would make a great plot for a Len Deighton book. Well, if he were still alive that is.

No need for Greece to cook the books. Cyprus voted to join the EU, so they will vote to join Greece in the same manner.

I'll stick my neck out here. :)

NATO isn't that stupid and, anyway, there's no mechanism. It would be subjected to a unanimous vote.

You're idea's interesting but frankly a flight into the realm of fantasy. Have you been talkin' to GR?

NO! :D

Greece is already a NATO member, therefore Cyprus having Enosis with Greece would be a private matter, call it a marriage. Cyprus would not need to ask for NATO membership approval. :D

We will all be surprised, because Erdogan turns on a dime. Speaking cynically he wants a Legacy, a great Legacy, and i don't think he is above getting it any way he can.

...the easiest way is to recognise the existence of Cyprus, and Cypriots. But, this would take Cypriots to show themselves, to openly reject the "Greekness" and the "Turkishness" which are no different in affect on all of them, and by uniting, openly and publicly demonstrating this capacity as Individuals to defend beyond "dogmas", principles that are universal; he could not wish for more as an example in his own reform of Turkey's Constitution as a State: a BBF too.

...if it is not with the "Brotherhood" bringing them this far, (as things are,) he may get back on the train he calls Democracy; "Turkishness" or Modern Turkey, one of them may likely feel betrayed (if he is given the right opportunity).

Fame, it is a good time for it, a man like Erdogan may say, times the way they are, what with Turkey's Centennial two years away.

...and in any case, he like us must be tired of the Problem, fifty years of hard work was lost by Turkey with the Annan Plan, Cyprus is not divided (yet); and now?

...indeed such an idea, that Nations may commit themselves toward defending a State is not anathema to his notions. Where but in Cyprus, can an example be made that he may emulate, where Justice may be seen, holding it in such high esteem that he may claim it as his own; if Cypriots demonstrate such a commitment to "being" Cypriot, a BBF that thrives: (being Cypriot, seeking to be represented as Individuals without any further distinction or discrimination, and as Persons with their distinct identities at another level of government representing the Goodwill they offer to minorities as majorities.)
