Typical week living in Cyprus

Postby scotslad » Fri Feb 03, 2006 3:16 pm

Hi,

I currently live in Scotland, almost the best place in the world to live! Apart from the weather! I’m an IT manager, and a part time Lecturer at Scotland’s largest college (www.abcol.ac.uk) but fancy a change.

I’ve been to Cyprus many times and love the country. I realise that being on holiday and actually living and working there can be very different.

So I just wondered what a typical week, living in Cyprus would be? And what the chances of employment would be (BSc Degree)?

I don't live in Cyprus anymore, so I'd only be able to give you info on a trpical Keti-holiday-week :) But I know for certain that there are a good deal of schools which run on the British education system (ok, slightly different from the Scottish but conversion might be a possibility?) e.g. Falcon, GC School of Careers, Pascal and the English School in Nicosia, Foleys in Limassol. There are also several American-system school on the island, e.g. AISC and the American Academies, so in that respect I'm sure you would be able to find a job teaching if that's what you fancy.

Otherwise, there seem to be a lot of one-man band "pc technicians" which do anything from building machines to sourcing bits to setting up and maintaining small commercial networks.

In terms of socialising, there are a lot of ex-pats living in Cyprus so there are plenty of people to socialise with.. loads of activity clubs and so on as well. However! Cypriots (partly being one myself.. *cough*) are really friendly and most will help you learn Greek if that's the way you'd like to go. Schools generally let out at lunchtime, so in the summer ther's plenty of time to make it to the beach and faff about there, or go exploring in the mountains. In the winter there are loads of great pubs to go to, cinemas etc.. the usual :)

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with more of a clue, however :D

Edit: The vast majority of Cypriots study in the UK so a BSc would be widely recognised. Im' not sure about teaching qualifications, however.

Hi keti,

Thanks for the info. I'm currently waiting to see if I’ve been accepted on a postgrad teaching course at Aberdeen Uni. However, if that falls through, I am seriously considering making a move!

Thanks again

Hi kitkat,

Whats the problem with Aberdeen, apart from the cold that is?

The "never looked back" sounds promising though, tell me more please...

The problem with Aberdeen apart from the weather is the idiots and minkers that live in it!!

I was back there for 22 days in December to sell my flat
(18 and a half days of rain, 4 days of snow 4 inches deep, and a half day of sun)

The majority of it, apart from maybe the west-end.

Where are you from? Im originally from Craigiebucker but my flat was in King Street.

What part of Cyprus would you be coming to if you came over to live? Im in a village near Paralimni and Ayia Napa.

Ellon, originally. Not sure where, depends where I can get some work.

Prefer to be on the coast somewhere.

What do you do?

Ive had a nice long holiday up till now but ive started looking for work, but its not easy finding a job because I dont speak greek which I have discovered is important if you want a decent job.

There is job centers here just like the UK but if you dont speak greek all they offer is kitchen or bar work and I dont want to do that....And wages are not good either...but there again, at least i dont have to pay that extortionate council tax no more...
