Nicosia/Lefkosia Airport and surrounding area

Postby Jez » Mon Feb 13, 2006 6:24 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to the site/forums and Cyprus for that matter, but would like to commend you all an a very informative and welcoming experience.

That being the case, I was wondering if anyone could shed a little light on a few questions I have.

My wife and I are currently looking to buy/build our home in nicosia. We've been dong the usual rounds, looking at different areas and the like but without a great deal of joy until ths weekend. We stumbled into an area adjacent to Nicosia's disused airfield/airport. (the area is behind/to the side of the American radar station) and found it to be great. However, when we talked over our thoughts with my wifes family they raised the question of the airfield/airport future use and the consequences of building in that area.

Also, while travelling to Troodos on the recently opened highway I noticed newly displayed sign posts for the Airport on the roundabout/flyover junction near the airfield. Again raising the question, are there plans to re-open the airport?

I've read in previous threads that the mountains to the north of the island are a hinderance to the possibility of large commercial/cargo aircraft but does anyone have any definative information regarding the future of the Airport? Failing definitive information, rumors, gossip, and inside knowledge would a great help .

Take it easy,

Jez

Jez do you mean the Lakatamia Airport? or the Nicosia Airport which is on the buffer zone?

I'm not sure which is which to tell you the truth, all I know is that the sign posts show to the right of the Highway, on your way past Kokkinotremithia.

So its the Nicosia Airport... still the airport is at the buffer zone. Personally I doubt that this airport will ever start operation, since after 30+ years, the whole infrastructure, buildings etc are totally out of order. It's like having a new aiport from scratch..... and I believe there are enough airports in the whole island and another one is not needed!

I take your point entirly. If the powers that be do decided that the Capial needs an Airport, then an "out of town" option would surley be best. Also if it comes at a time when the now buffer-zoned option is being considered and consequently the north/south divide reconciled (fingers crossed on that one!) then a more central, world class, large scale development would suit the needs of the Island better. Access across the board, the far south exluded, would be great. In this case LCA and the airpots in the north would become redundant and in turn would help focus, finance, Infrastructure, national pride etc, etc. Pie in the sky I know but if and when unification, in what ever form, happens the possibility of one major world class airport for the whole nation is an option that IMO should be considered long and hard.

They are now going to spent millions to build new airports in Larnaca and Paphos.

I doubt that airport will function again.

who?

I hope this is the case then maybe the land we've spotted will not be over shadowed/flown by the airport/planes

The signs are there because the UN use the airport as a camp of some kind. They need the signs so they can find their way to their Go-Karts. That is the only noise I think you will suffer from. They have a track in the camp

Jez,
I live in that neighborhood. That is not an American radar station, I assure you. It merely receives satellite and HF signals generating in nearby countries. They have no transmission capabilities. No Americans work there, only Cypriots.

The biggest neighborhood problem aviation wise is the Laketamia airport, which on any given day may have a few helicopters that fly in an out. Other than that, everything is very quite.

Having traveled through out the UNPA, the Argentinean contingent currently occupies the old airport hanger buildings. They use them as barracks. They have a laundry and a dining facility, and a rarely open club called Banditos.

The Nicosia airport is not going to open up anytime soon. I think you are making a solid purchase.
