PROBLEMS WITH I CHOICE ADSL (CYTA) IN LCA VILLAGES

Postby djtrax98 » Mon Feb 20, 2006 8:48 pm

Hi,
I am baffled.
My dad got i choice installed in november in the village of Ormidhia in Larnaca district.
Since then he has changed 3 computers and the problem is ongoing. Basically the connection is fine till lunchtime, then it slows right down so that its slower than 56k and by late evening its intolerable.
CYTA of course maintain that everything is fine, DESPITE having changed every wire from the exchange to the computer due to faults. We have spent months of complainign and shouting (on one occasion being shouted at??!?!?!?!?!?) and still nothing. Could this be a problem with the local exchange in the village not being big enough to handle the demand or is it a bigger problem than this?
I have i choice 1mbps (the same as my dad) in Ayia Napa and i have never had ANY problems with it, its fast efficient and reliable 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
How can my connection be faster in napa than my dads in a village 20 kms away when we both have the same service, with CYTA saying its normal? I dont understand.
IS ANYONE ELSE IN THE LARNAKA VILLAGE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SERVICE LIKE THIS PLZ let me know as i am collecting this information for possible action against these idiots.

Not sure about Cyprus, but hear in the UK the availability and service depends greatly on your location to the exchange(telephone exchange),The closer you are to it the better connection and reliability.

So,if it is the same ,you may find that out in villages some distance from the local exchange may have connection problems.

Hi Cov,
The house is less than 1 km form the local exchange in fact you can see it from the kitchen window up the road to the left! The speed is dreadful, there is no excuses for the service he is getting. It must be a usage problem as the problems always occur from lunchtome onwards.
Perhaps they have specified on the exchange the number of concurrent users who can be on the net at any one time therefore limiting users to a certain bandwidth?
I dunno how they do it. IF CYTA invested as much into helping their customers as they do in writing up terms and conditions to save them from being sued( they cover absolutely EVERYTHING) then perhaps many of their clinets may actually be happy.

Call Cyta and ask them to test the copper lines from your dads house/flat to the exchange. There could be signal leakage somewhere because of a bad connection.

It could be that the haven't put the jumper wires in properly in their cabinet or the dp (distribution point). Think they call it MDF here for some unknown reason.

Also, send them emails explaining the situation, and see what happens. Might even be a faulty modem?

We have sent them several emails they dont seem to be responding to any of them.... I know other people in the village are experiencing the same problem wether cyta is their isp or not. So i have come to the conclusion that it must be a cyta exchange problem. Your points have definately been noted though, and will pass this info on. Anyone else appear to have these problems?

Oh, sorry forgot modem is fine its been tested as we have mivision as well, the problem starts at lunchtime every day known as the 'cutoff' point in our house, and continues throughout the night. The fact that the problems start at roughly the same time every day would that not indicate that its a heavy area usage on the service caused by kids going home form school and just downloading everything they can till they go to bed at night?

I made further enquiries into this djtrax98, and it appears that the tests that CyTA do on their lines is done using a voice line. Unfortunately, that means jack s**t if you want ADSL.

What exchange is it exactly djtrax? I'll see what info I can find out about it.

hi,
as the house is in the center of the village, i woul believe that its connected to the exchange in ormidhia going to lca.
hope this helps.

We have similar problems at work sometimes. Everything works fine until noon and then speed drops! I think cyta network is overloaded in some areas. Lets hope that Primetel will help with this problem when they start offering their services.
