My dear friend, as a Cypriot born abroad you have a diduction on the cars tax if you are mouving over permanently. But have in mind that this diduction from the tax is only 3,500 Cyprus pounds.
The total amount of tax calculated for this car is 4,599cc X 8CYP = 36,792 plus the VAT and you will have to pay for an SVA test, MOT and the registration fees.
It is better for you to think it over unless you are a rich gy.

Well having a BMW 540 here DOES mean that you have a fair amount of money to cover its expenses.... :)

Paralimni is now an English suburb

Konnos is still good, but packed in the summer at weekends.

Nice wheels by the way, but might be wasted here :?

Hi Marinos,

I just spoke with the Customs and Excise Department last night. There is good and bad news. The good news is that if you are making Cyprus your permanent home and you can prove your absence for a certain amountof years, you are entitled to import one car PER DRIVER in your family free of duty, excise and VAT.

The bad news is that these requirements are reasonably stringent:

1) You need to have had the car for at least 6 Months and USED it during that time

2) The car should have at least 60,000 Kilometres on it

3) You need proof of insurance and registration for 6 months

4) There is a good bit of paperwork and forms to fill out in addition to a number of trips you might have to make back and forth to the import authority

5) There is the possibility of being rejected for exception by an official that simply wants to charge you. They did not tell me this but if you look on the site: http://www.mof.gov.cy under Customs and Excise you will find the documentation you need and it seems clear that it is not a foregon conclusion that no tax will be charged.

I was all ready to import a car but we've not owned it for 6 months and would need to show insurance for it. It is a shame. Let me put it this way. I have an ML320. To import it with excise would come to around USD50,000. I am not sure what other people here have been quoting in terms of rates, but this is directly from the Department in Cyprus.

Best to you!

Maewing, thanks for getting back to me!

Sounds GOOD if true!!

I CAN meet all the requirements, so i guess i better make some calls also and do some confirming (which may be dificult in Cyp) and then come to a decision.

Good luck to you also my friend, and i APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND INFO.

No Problem

There were economies of scale since I needed the info for myself anyway. I hope it works out for you!

Thank you Lana.

I hope its just VAT.

I have no problem in paying a reasonable amount to bring it to Cyprus but cannot justify large amounts like 30-50,000 pounds!

Isn't the full allowance just £7,000 and the reduced £3,500. I think you will be stung with the £30,000 import tax. As for the Harley, it is cheaper to buy it here than bring it over. Husband brought a 100th anniversary vrod last year which was 2 years old for £16,000. Brand new was hitting the £20,000's and upwards. The import tax is one of the highest in the EU. Get something in writing from the relevant Govt Dept before coming over as they always change their tune. Each person says something different..... Good Luck!
