English Education in Cyprus

Postby Niki » Sat Mar 04, 2006 6:20 pm

Hello anybody in Cyprus - especially people who have moved from the UK with children.

My family (me, husband, 2 girls aged 10 and 12 and 2 dogs) are considering moving to Cyprus in about 1.5 years to a better climate for my husband's health. Cyprus seems to ring all the right bells for what we need although I don't know anyone who has made this move.

The key issue is how good the english curriculum schools are as this is our priority.

I have found a number of private schools in Limassol (Heritage, Logos, Grammar, Foleys) and would appreciate any thoughts on these or even if our plans to relocate would be a bad thing for their education.

We are all completely prepared to absorb a different culture and don't expect Cyprus to be another warmer version of the UK.

We are coming over on July to look around so any advice would be great.

Thank you.

Niki

Grammar school and American academy are all english schools. I know American academy is also a good prep school. I dont know what you want exactly but I am sure that if you contact them, they will send you more information. Course it's been six years since I was back home so I might be talking silly.

In Limassol i went to both Foleys and Grammar..... and without a doubt Foleys is by far the better one, with the more qualified teachers and it is British family run.

The Grammar School has a nicer campus and facilities, but the teaching was not comparable to Foleys, even though they offer more choices.

Foleys should be moving into their new campus by the time you arrive though. Entrance is not so easy., there's a waiting list, so see what you can find out now by contacting them.

Grammar School you also have to do an entry exam.

Both follow the english system..... O and AS levels by EdExcel

Thanks for this.

I was considering looking at the American Academy.

I have heard Foleys is good so as you say there is a waiting list I'd better get in touch to see what the situation is.

Thanks for this tcklim and andre-cy.

To be honest, I wouldn't suggest the Limassol American Academy. All the students there had the worst reputation, and i know that all the people that were expelled from both the schools i went to seemed to end up over there.

Not really recommended....

Its the opposite in Larnaca, with America Accademy being very particular on who can and can't go. Med High also has quite a good reputation, but the teachers cry like big babies when they get beaten at football :D

So - the thinking so far seems to be that there are good schools and my girls would be well educated in Cyprus?

I think I need to visit a few but please carry on replying - it's really useful.

You lucky thing - I wish I was moving this year!!

That's really encouraging. It must be good for the girls to get an insight into a different culture - all part of their education.

Thanks for this
