Two Barak MX batteries won’t defeat Turkey’s military, but they do matter, particularly within a layered defence system. if we look at these in isolation, they give Cyprus a credible shield over the island and raise the cost of any aggression because Turkey now has to factor in significant losses. It’s not about matching Turkey’s firepower, it’s about their deterrence capabilities.
Lets take a quick look at what two Barak MX batteries are capable of:
> Intercepts aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and ballistic missiles up to 150 KM (two batteries can easily cover Cyprus's key infrastructure)
> 2x8 launchers can engage multiple threats simultaneously, including mass drone or missile swarms, with rapid reloading capability.
> The systems advanced radar can track and engage numerous threats concurrently, its designed for high capacity, multi-target engagement scenarios.
Basically, two launchers significantly increases Cyprus' defence capabilities and denies Turkey impunity over Cypriot airspace. That’s why Turkey’s whining, because if Greece and Israel also park some frigates with air defence systems off the southern coast of Cyprus, they can effectively deny Turkey the air space in the eastern Mediterranean.
