working and living in cyprus

Postby jazzy1 » Sun Mar 19, 2006 9:13 pm

Hi Guys

Can anyone give me he rundown of what needs to be done legally when moving to Cyprus.

My Husband and I hold british Passports. we are looking to live and set up a small business in Larnaca, so we will be self employed.

Does anyone know if we have to apply for residency to live there and how we go about setting up our business (registering it etc)

Thank you

xx

You should have no problem getting an Alien Registration Card form Immigration to give you the right to live there.
That should also be good for working or owning a business there I believe but I am not as updated on all that as other people on here since I am not living in the EU.

Hi Jazzy1,

You have to register with the 'Aliens Department' if you plan to live here. The wesite of the Ministry of the Interior has details - see: http://moi.gov.cy/newscontent.php?id=128

As for setting yourselves up in business - a lawyer will be able to set up a company on your behalf.

It's all easy-peasy now Cyprus is in the EU.

Compared with the UK running a profitable business n Cyprus is a significant challenge - unless you speak Greek or have something out of the ordinary that is in demand by Cypriots.

Thank you for your replys.

I am very worried about making a living in Cyprus.

I am hoping that if all else fails that my Husband who is Greek (but bought up in UK) could get some work in a gym/fitness centre as he is a Personal Trainer and Martial arts instructor over here and has a Degree in Physical Education.

He is also doing a Course for Teaching English as a foreign language.

As for me I have 2 children aged 1 and 2 yrs, so I may be able to work part timejust for a little extra money whilst my parents look after them
I was thinking of trying to get a Chambermaid job in a Hotel.

Does anyone know the best way to do this? would I just ask around in the hotels or is there any agencies?

Thanking you kindly xx

The pay would be pretty cr@p for you. As for your husband I have no idea how much they would offer. I always say if you have a skill like that it's better to branch out alone and do it yourself. Alot of the major hotels are covered by unions for their employees so that seems to be tied up. Again you could always advert for cleaning in private houses, or ironing by the bag. I know the ironing is £10.00 for a bin liner full of items. Don't expect to make tons of money as these sorts of jobs are badly paid. As for setting up a company here, my advise would be to use an accountant to set it up. Lawyers usually charge a retainer for the year for this service and you'd need an accountant anyway to file your accounts each year and audit etc. It is about £600 to set up a co. here in Cyprus and pretty easy to do. Most women work to be honest and either have the luxury of their parents or inlaws looking after the kids, or a live in helper or creche. The creches range in price, in Laranca you can expect to pay anything between £70-£120 per week for nursery care. P/T work is a rarety. Where I work I'd say 80% are women with 70% having kids. Of the ones with kids, 40% of those have live in help, 20% care from inlaws, 10% creche and nursery the other 30% have kids who are old enough to look after themselves until mum finishes at 5.30. Most mums don't stay at home unless the father earns enough to support them. Child support is awful here.

Hi Jazzy1

> or is it common for them to go out and work?.

In this respect, I guess Cyprus is somewhat similar to the UK before the sixties 'revolution' started progress towards equal opportunities.

You will also find that the Cypriot management 'culture' is very autocratic compared to what you've been used to in the UK (unless you've been working for Attila the Hun or Jo Stalin).

As an expatriate, you'd probably be better looking for employment in one of the many offshore companies than working as a chambermaid in a hotel. Indeed most of the hotel workers, particularly in Paphos, are Eastern European or Asian and who work for a pittance.
