What the atmosphere is for a Turkish Cypriot amongst GCs?

Postby Kikapu » Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:07 pm

I was thinking coming to Cyprus this year for couple of weeks after been gone for 42 years, but backed away from the idea for 2 reasons. I wanted to spend one week in the South and the other in the North.
Reason 1: Not being certain what the atmosphere is for a Turkish Cypriot amongst Greek Cypriots. I had concerns in Hotels, Restaurants, and just being out and about for some one with a Turkish name.
Reason 2: I did not want to deal with all the Red tape in the North over the military service.
Like to know how the gcs feel having tcs amongst them, and like to know what experience any tcs had visiting North and the South. This may help me to decide to come later this year.
Thanks.

My nephew (22 years old) flew direct to Larnaca with some English friends of his. He has a typical Turkish name and looks it too. Even though he is called Corry by all his friends the local Greek boys somehow got to find out he was a TC. He had a knife put to his throat and punched and kicked. He managed to come back in one peace but swore never to visit the south again.

All this because he is a good looking lad and a TURK and was getting a lot of attention from the ladies.

Our Greek friends talk about being European but not in reality. When a donkey becomes a race horse the GC's will become Europeans.

Kikapu,

This happened the year before the borders opened up. He went against the advice of the whole family.

What exactly is your point?

mrfromng,

I mean, poor nephew, he's not responsible to all the problems in Cyprus and he gets attacked.

1000s of Greek and Turkish Cypriots cross the gates every day and no incidents happen. Whenever I go to a hospital in Nicosia I see many Turkish Cypriots there. I can understand they are Turkish Cypriots because they talk in Turkish. mrfromng is just talking nonsense. If his nephew had problems thats probably because of his attitude and his ways of trying to get attention from the ladies.

Sotos,

Your attitude is typical, anything that does not suit you becomes nonsense. I agree this is something that does not happen on daily basis but you are trying to paint a picture that it never does. What about the father and son that was assaulted in their car? What about the Turk that got attacked in the cafe while having a coffee with his Greek friends? What about TC's motor cars having their tyres slashed?

You guys have the memory span of a gold fish!

I have to totally disagree with you. The incidents you mentioned above are just a couple of minor ones, if you compare with the amount of people from both sides crossing the borders.... It is like admiting that since airplanes crash, people should not use them.... Come on give me a break!!!!
