Cost of buying certain items in Cyprus

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Hey, thanks folks! So you think that if we want high quality, we can it for decent price? We are moving to Lefkara and though it is not Troodos, it is cooler than Nicosia (I am told about 6 degrees cooler). However, when the temperature is 45 in Nicosia I guess this does not mean much!

Has anyone experimented with those freestanding airconditioners? They are not popular here in Hong Kong because the humidity is such that they are not strong enough to battle it. However, I am not keen on the split units and we've bought a very old home with very thick stone walls. I thought a combination of one of these in each room with ceiling fans would do the trick. Do they sell free standing units in Cyprus (that you know of)?

Thanks,

Our house is stuffed with split-unit air conditioners (nine in total) but we don’t use any of them. We found we quickly acclimatised to the heat here.

You can buy stand-alone air-conditioning units but I have no idea of the price.

I’d suggest you come and spend some time here, see what is available and evaluate your needs before making decisions from afar which you might regret later.

Thanks Cyprusgrump,

My suspicion is that we will acclimatize too since we are coming from Hong Kong which is much more humid and uncomfortable. Apart from about 2 months during the year, the aircons here are on constantly, everywhere--partly just to keep the room dry. As I said before, we are also moving to Lefkara and I am told Nicosians vacate during the summer and come to their summer places in Lefkara.

Thanks for the advice but we are already set to move. It was impossible during my stays in Cyprus to check many of these things. As another contributor said, it is very hard to find places to compare prices when you are new there. Last visit I spent most of my time figuring out what baby stores were there and closing on our house!

why is it you think that they should be getting less than they do in Paris? Paris has some god given right to sell stuff more expensive and get away with it for some reason?

I think what he is saying is that in places like Paris incomes are higher, population density is higher (so demand is higher) so the shops can charge more. I do think it is a bit ridiculous that Starbucks in Nicosia charges far more than in Times Square NY, Hong Kong or London (I'm talking double) three of the world's priciest cities. It is a bit extortionary. Of course people pay so maybe the coffee is that good

Are there good Chinese restaurants in Larnaca, Limassol, Nicosia?

It is the opposite. Shops in big cities can sell more so they can survive with lower margins. Also since they sell more they can get better prices from manufacturers. Thats why prices are lower.

Many. But not so sure how good you will find them since you are coming from China!

The price of the LCD is 420£ cyp the same in Paris 420€(240£).
A shop in Paris will sell to 100 000 customers, the same in Cyprus to 1000.
Taxes in Paris are higher than in cyprus.

We cannot compare really, but one thing sure its cheaper to buy outside of cyprus and delivery fees wont cost 180$ even with UPS.

What they forget in cyprus, is less you take benefits more you sell.
