Cost of buying certain items in Cyprus

Postby maewing » Tue May 02, 2006 7:52 am

Hi, I am moving to Cyprus soon with my family and trying to decide what to take and what to keep. I am wondering whether anyone would be kind enough to give me their best guess as to the average price (if we wanted to replace them) of the following items?:

--Ceiling fans (with lights, wooden blades)
--Wooden, outdoor furniture
--Refrigerator (2 door, stainless)
--Chef quality gas stove with oven

Thanks in advance!

Hi maewing

I think the answer to your questions are 'how much do you want to pay'

Take a look at: http://www.dalcoworld.com/ they have prices for just about everything on their web site. (Ceiling fans start off at around CYP 30.00)

Hey Thanks so much! This is really useful. I could not find ceiling fans on there though. Was your estimate from there?

Hi Maewing,

> I could not find ceiling fans on there though

That's why I posted the price. The CYP 30.00 ones are made in Mumbai (Bombay) by a company called 'Crompton Greaves' (who are not connected with the Crompton UK company).

We bought our ceiling fans a couple of years ago from a place called 'Dimco' http://www.dimco.com.cy - they're made in Italy and cost around CYP 80 as I recall.

There is a huge range of ceiling fans over here to fit almost any budget.

But as far as I know the Dalco branch is not so high quality, several friends bought washing machines or fridges, and were not that happy... Too risky for me though, hence I prefer more expensive one like Bosch, Siemens etc,...

Hi Mikros,

I can't comment on the quality of Dalco stuff, we brought our appliances with us from the UK (Miele & De Dietrich). The hob alone was about CYP200 cheaper in the UK - they wanted CYP 555 here!!

But that was before EU accession, I don't know how prices compare these days.

And I thought there was a problem with using gas ovens here?

This is good to know. I am interested in only high quality goods since that is the only kind I believe will last and perform properly. My fear was that higher quality things would be more expensive than in other parts of the world. I think EU accession only increases this chance since it has caused inflation everywhere else. In my case, I am coming from Hong Kong and certain products (obviously those made in China) can be cheaper. However, from what I saw on that site, outdoor goods tend to be much cheaper in Cyprus.

Mikros, did you have any leads on high quality goods comparisons (such as a site like Dalco's)?

Thanks,

Maewing

There is a vast choice of every kind of kitchen product here and quality to suit every taste and budget.

Something to remember when comparing prices (especially on the higher quality goods) is that the big stores will give you quite large discounts (I think we got 30%) if you place a reasonable order. we bought oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher (all Neff) and huge fridge/freezer and got an amazing deal.

The other advantage of buying here of course is you’ll have a local warranty.

the biggest problem for a newcomer here is finding where to buy what you want.

I found Electroline pretty good for electrical goods tho if you want cheap and cheerful 'Pop Life' is pretty good

a big problem here is you do not have such a huge choice of goods as in the UK, but hey if we wanted UK advantages (and disadvantages) we'd stay there :) :) :)

maewing, just to let you know that unless you are moving to Troodos mountain just ceiling fans will not be enough. You will need aircondition. I have ceiling fans in the bedrooms of my apartment and the last time they have been used was over 5 years ago.
