Sexing a Spider

Postby funseeker » Fri Jun 02, 2006 2:24 pm

Sexing Spiders is just the same as every other species.

 The females are the ones that bite! Same as wasps - only the females sting!

Male spiders are usually considerably smaller.

Big Spider

Postby bungle » Fri Jun 02, 2006 4:07 pm

I think this was a female spider then as it was large!

I was not close enough to get bitten luckily!

It did have a very dense large web nearby with a few flies, chicken wings and kebabs in it though

during mating the female bites off the head of the male. so the one without the head is the male!

Ahhh - now I get it! Well it had its head intact so it must have been the female.

A friend of mine who visited Malawi told me about spiders there that locally are called 'vroom vrooms' supposedly because they can move as fast as cars... !?!

Apparently they are very large and hairy and have large heads with faces like foxes. They come out at night, attracted by lights. They feed on small rodents, bats etc. Put me off going to Malawi for good!!!

dont think the link came out, here is another pic of a giant robber crab found in the Indian Ocean on islands such as Aldabra and Christmas Island. Now that really would make me run for the hills...

Had a spider crawl out of my case after a trip to Venezuela. Good job it was before the film Arachnaphobia came out as the spiders in that came from there.
