Big Spider!

Postby Niki » Wed May 24, 2006 11:11 am

This was in my suitcase when I got home from Greece. It was about 4 inches diameter and I swear it was licking it's lips when it looked at me!

Anyone know what it is???

Does anyone else have a stowaway story?

Well my husband fended it off with a chair and put it into a big jar (very carefully and with shaky hands).

He squashed it with a hammer, stamping on it didn't work - it's surface was like a suit of armour apparently but with spikes all over it - yeuch! :|

Eeewwww..... I am gonna have nightmares over that. Have to say it doesn't look real. And sounds more like a crab type animal than an insect. You should have given it to immigration, as an illegal immigr-Ant.

I thought it might be a wolf spider - do they bite?

I heard of someone on the same holiday who had been bitten by a spider and his leg swelled up so much he had to go to hospital. The Greeks called it a sand spider?

The fangs were ENORMOUS!

I saw a large spider in Vavatsinia last Sunday. It was approx. 7-8 inches long about 3 inches high and had very distinct white bands around each leg, the main body colour was caramel / beige. I have been looking on the Internet to see what it could have been but other than that it probably is part of the Wolf Spider family (of which there are over 2,000 types) I can't find a picture of it.

It was on top of our car and as it scurried across it the sound was like nails tapping glass.

Having been confronted by a large Huntsman spider in Brisbane last year, I was not too taken aback but have to say was surprised to see such a large spider in Cyprus!

Anyone else seen anything similar?

I have no idea if it was male or female - I wouldn't know how to tell on a spider
