how dangerous really is ayia napa?

Postby costanza » Wed May 24, 2006 6:33 pm

i met some guy from ghana and jamaica the other week and they've invited me down to ayia napa on saturday night with them.. but since mentioning it to my dad he's gone on about how dangerous ayia napa is.
apparently there is a lot of fights between foreigners and cypriots. and i'm a 'charlie' so that makes me a foreigner apparently.

i mean, i know fights happen when people drink. i used to promote club nights in south london. but does every saturday night end in ayia napa with lots of fights?

i'm still looking forward to it, i quite like a good piss-up and drunken dance. but should i be looking over my shoulder all night? i suspect my dad has exagerated about the violence somewhat..

If you mind your own business I dont think you will get in a fight. Agia Napa is not the ghetto

BTW I dont consider 'charlies' to be foreigners... I am sure a lot of cypriots dont.

i'm not sure. i can speak greek but not fluently, so i've always felt a bit like an outsider. i know lots of great cypriots who are all really friendly, but ive had some bad experiences. mainly at bars or clubs. just before christmas i was queuing up for circus and the guy on the door said there were no charlies on the guestlist and wouldnt let me in. that was an extreme example, i dont let it bother me. i'm hoping to improve my spoken greek while i'm over here now though

Wow, that sucks. I guess it is either getting worse or I was never exposed to such discrimination in my family and my town. We have had a few ex pats visit every summer and my brother became friends with them and they would be at our house all the time eating and sleeping and having fun and they even jokingly called my mom MAMMA lol. I had heard stories but I never thought they might be real. Sucks for me now that my kid is a charlie huh?

costanza, i know that cypriots like to have fight with english, but not with cypriots born outside cyprus. and not only in agia napa  if it happends you will have fight there, it will be not because you are charlie but because of something else  i think you have nothing to worry about, really. just have fun

costanza, if you mind your own business, and not pretend that you are a macho man/woman, there you don't have to be afraid from anything.

From mid June - late September, I go to Ayia Napa almost every week and have to say, its not as bad as people make out. As long as you get in the spirit of things, you have nothing to worry about!
