Cyprus Salaries.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby GG » Wed Jun 07, 2006 11:29 am

I am thinking of moving to Cyprus to live however I have been warned that salaries are extremely low. Is this true or is it just an issue of the exchange rate?

For example :

a graduate going into their firts job in London would get at least £18,000 per year.

a general manager of a retail shop would be easily on £30,000 per year.

a young untrained secretary who just answers phones and uses the photocopier will be on a minimum of £16,000 per year and possibly up to £30,000 if she is a personal assistant.

HOW DO ALL THESE FIGURES COMPARE TO CYPRUS SALARIES?

I dont know the salaries for the positions mentioned.
There are lots of threads on the forum which have discussed this topic and which take into account cost of living, quality of life etc.
In my experience when doing an equivalent job in Cyprus to one I would do in the UK then taking in all considerations I have a better lifestyle than in the UK even though the actual salary is lower.

Yes I realise what you are saying but I wont be selling up in London so I will still have mortgage and bills in London etc. So the actual figures are relevant. One of the big motivators to live in Cyprus is that the lifestyle is much cheaper but if that is proprptional to the salaries then its a bit of a false statement.

A graduate ic Cyprus will get about 10000CYP for his first salary depending of course on the position.

A retail manage would be getting about 20000CYP per year.

However be careful that after you deduct the taxes from the 18000 GBP and the council tax etc where do you get? In Cyprus the first 10000CYP you earn are tax free, and there is no such thing as council tax

Hi GG

If you're keeping your Uk prop and mortgage thats a whole new ball game. Cant help you I'm afraid.
Only you know what you need to cover your UK outgoings. Serious research would be the order of the day.

Good Luck hope you manage your move out here.

Lana,

If they're paying this little in the ROC, I hate to think what the North pays for the same positions. It was mentioned a while back that many TC's cross over to work in the ROC. Are they paid the same, or do they get the rate that is a "living wage" to the North.

Also it was mentioned before, that there're many foreign workers in the ROC, presumably from poor countries in order to keep the salaries low. Are there not enough people in the whole of Cyprus to fill all the jobs without bringing in workers from outside.? As long as these practices continue, wages will always stay low. It's not exactly cheap to come to Cyprus for couple of weeks vacation, compared to other European destinations in the sun.

Someone is making the money at the expense of the workers. Sounds a little bit like the Mexican workers in the USA, who work very hard for very little. Americans still want them out, since they blame the Mexicans for working for less. They really should blame the employers for not paying more. Slavery still continues I'm afraid, only this time legally !!!

You will get NOTHING like those wages here, unless you are very lucky and work for an offshore or foreign company.
