erdogan-papadopoulos meeting at ledra palace??????????????

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Nickp » Wed Feb 16, 2005 12:35 pm

Hey there,

You know, all this politics is a bit annoying, it makes the Cyprus problem seem tough to resolve. The irony is there's probably, Greek and Turkish Cypriots who could have resolved the problems years ago!!!! Unfortunetly, there type of people are not in charge.

I belive Erogdan coming to meet Papadopoulous is a really good sign. For the first time i think one of the main powerbrokers is coming for direct talks on the island. I do belive that Turkey is starting to look more anxious to solve the problem as nothing has this has happened like this before. Obvoiously, this is down to EU membership.

In terms of Turkey's security, well, let me see, they have the Greeks to the West, the GC's to the south, the Kurds and Armenian's to the East.
There pretty much surrounded. And with Greece and Cyprus being the more economically advanced countries, hence more spending on military stuff, plus the fact that they could block any ships getting to Turkey from the Medeterinean. I guess this is why the Turkish army has been in Cyprus so long when they talk about strategic interestes.

Regardless, times have changed, i'm looking forward to the Cyprus problem being solved so i can visit th island and go anywhere freely and mingle with the TC's. Or maybe i'm too much of an optimist. :D

I believe one of the main reasons GC rejected Annan Plan is that there sizeable portion of the GC society that simply do not care for unification, becasue they did not lost anything in 1974,

Mais, qu'est-ce que tu dit????

GCs didn't lose anything? YOu mean aside from their land and their freedom to move and live around their country??
And since the Annan plan did not cover these two issues well.. enough said everybody knows the Annan plan was seriously flawed.

Yes, I'm sure there are many people like this who will never agree to live in a united country with TCs but that number is probably smaller than all TCs out there.

All I know for sure is that to the question/statement "I am happy for Turkey to guide our policies", the majority of Turkish Cypriots would strongly agree.

How this fact is to be interpreted, I don't know. Our Turkish Cypriot friends here can probably give us a clearer insight into the meaning of this result.

Certainly I know that if we were to ask the equivalent question to Greek Cypriots, it wouldn't even make sense to them.

And this, despite the fact that in both sides the "motherland" concept has been strong in the past.

I guess my intepretation is that, because Turkey is the only one who stood up for the Turkish Cypriots over the last thirty years, while the rest of the world ignored them, they grew very attached to their protector ...

So it is totally understandable, though we need to make sure that in case of re-unification the Turkish Cypriots will learn to turn more towards their Cypriot co-citizens, and also towards the European Union of which they will be a part, gradually becoming weaned of Turkey as the Greek Cypriots have become weaned of Greece.

You are right about your analysis, Alexandros.

If their Cypriots co-citizens and also EU partners treat them better than Turkey, why not? Why does a man trust another man? Because they sincerely get along well... But the public psychology must not be taken out of consideration. If the probable to occure ill-treatment, unfairness, hostile or any disturbing, irritating attitudes, actions, behaviours have come from even for instance only the %10 percent of GCs against TCs; they will blame and react against majority of GCs. Their old wounds will be brought back. And if they believe that such actions are encouraged and tolerated by government officials and some organizations; no one can stop us from the big drop.
