British Cypriots turned out in considerable force to express their outrage at the recent Britain-Turkey strategic partnership.

The picketing was on Thursday 1 November between 6pm - 8.30pm.

Turn-out
The crowd had numbered 400 who had descended on Whitehall to protest their "utter disgust and outrage" at the strategic "Joint Partnership" agreement between UK and Turkey announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown which includes British support for Turkey's illegal regime in the northern occupied territories of Cyprus.

The National Federation of Cypriots were the organisers - who voiced their satisfaction at the attendance which was of a significant size for the swiftly organised protest.

Slogans
The vociferous crowd had chanted slogans such as "Turkish troops out of Cyprus", "Justice for Cyprus", "Brown Out!" and "The British bases out of Cyprus".

The wave of Cypriot flags was a common sight at the demonstration. Greek flags had accompanied the proceedings to show Greece's support and solidarity for the plight of the Cypriots.

Student protesters
The mass turn out saw pupils from universities in Luton, Birmingham, Brighton, Southampton and Manchester.

Senior citizens
The senior protester who turned out in considerable force, loyally have supported such demonstrations since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

LGR coverage
The demonstraters who were quizzed by London Greek Radio had reiterated that they were "utterly disgusted and dissapointed with British government policy over Cyprus and especially with the policies of the Labour Government."

Petition to be handed over
The delegation of the National Federation of Cypriots had attempted to hand over a petition to 10 Downing Street - but it was declined because of protocol - no petitions are accepted after 7pm, the petition will be issued on Friday 2 November.

The petition reads as follows:
"Dear Prime Minister, the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom representing 300,000 Cypriots in this country hearby petitions you to consider carefully the implications of your government's recent strategic partnership agreement with Turkey as this relates to Cyprus.

"Stragetic factors in the region surrounding Iraq appear to be unduly compromising the UK's long-standing and principalled committment to justice and international law."

Signed by Peter Droussiotis and members of the secretariat of the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom.

The agreement has come at such a time that (in my opinion) theres NO chance what so ever for it to be altered....but we'll see....

If they are prepared to protest so strongly, then we all know it must be good for the TRNC :D :D :D :D

Nearly there, bit by bit, as they say Rome wasn’t built in a day!!

Our anger should be directed at our government that has brought all these onto us. It is not just GB, we now have scores to settle with traditional friends too, such as Syria, Germany and Italy. Even Sweden "betrayed" us. It is easy to blame the "others" but we need to ask ourselves "what has brought on this behaviour even from our friends".

Question

Our anger should be directed at our government that has brought all these onto us. It is not just GB, we now have scores to settle with traditional friends too, such as Syria, Germany and Italy. Even Sweden "betrayed" us. It is easy to blame the "others" but we need to ask ourselves "what has brought on this behaviour even from our friends".

Answer

Greek flags had accompanied the proceedings to show Greece's support and solidarity for the plight of the Cypriots.

The demonstraters who were quizzed by London Greek Radio

Because Cyprus is increasingly being seen as ruled by two governments, a Greek-Cypriot one and a Turkish-Cypriot one.

Of course GB are just get advantage of Papadopoulos government and I never believed what they wanted a
solution anyway. When for example for donation they gave the annoying 20 mil offer where other countries
with less responsibility for Cyprus they gave much bigger amounts.

In the Anan plan they was going to loose half of the bases and united Cyprus and as member of Europe could
be stronger and able to throw them out and I do not really believe what they actually wanted this evolvement.

And like I see it the today situation suits them perfect.

And other thoughts are passing by my mind, what maybe they choose this time to make that move to harm Cypriots pride and push them to vote Papadopolous that his isolated nationalistic policy suits them perfect, like they may did also with the Anan plan when in the delirium at the referendum they could do the same to harm people pride to lead in the wanted result.

What do you think?

Where this situation is leading in to?

In the Anan plan they was going to loose half of the bases

I'm fairly sure that the Anan Plan said nothing about the bases. UK offered to give up some land in one of the bases if Cyprus was reunited as a gesture/incentive towards a Yes Vote.

united Cyprus and as member of Europe could
be stronger and able to throw them out

Rather like a much bigger and more powerful united Spain, as a member of Europe, has thrown the British out of Gibraltar.

I sense a certain lack of depth in your understanding of Cyprus and the World.
