I remember a story my father told me regarding an Australian SAS soldier who helped with the training and was involved with the fighting alongside the Cypriot army.
He maintained the Cypriot soldiers rifles were kept in poor condition and in some cases would not fire.He along with Cypriot regulars was captured above Kyrenia,he was realeased as a foreign national soon after capture,

????????? :? :? :?

Kafenes, a penny for your thoughts. You seem to be in a quanderry. I'd like to hear. I think the murdered Armenians are included. If not they should be.

Deniz, as far as I know, there were no Armenians murdered between 1964 and 1974 by the EOKA B or the TMT. Actually, I cannot recall of any murders at all between these years except the 1974 coup and war. But then I could be wrong.

My mistake Kafenes. I did not mean killed by EOKA B or GC/Gr.

Missing Persons Committee also informing by the people.

I believe that Sevgül Uludağ should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for this work she is doing. This kind of process is necessary so that the ghost of the past can finally be be buried.

Tim, are there any published documents yet? ...as Hallil says they are published every day and for some strange reason his unable to cut&paste them?

As Halil says, these articles have been appearing regularly in the CTP's newspaper for some time now; for several years I think. Sometimes she simply interviews ordinary Cypriot people about life in the past, and sometimes she tries to unearth the truth about missing people. Essentially both of these involve tapping into the collective memory of ordinary Cypriot people and I think her work is of immense value. She is typical of her generation in that she is equally fluent in Greek and Turkish, and I find all of her writing to be objective and balanced.

Surely some of these articles must be appearing in Greek translation in the GC press. Perhaps somebody can enlighten me on that point.

I have the 7 January edition of Yeni Düzen to hand, and in it there is a moving article in which she describes how she finally managed to pursuade a GC, who wished to remain anonymous, to travel to the north and show two now middle-aged TCs where their fathers lie buried. One of them was two years and the other three months old when they lost their father.

What strikes me is that this GC only finally agreed to travel to the north on condition that a TC hostage be left in the village in the south to guarantee his safe return. This request was complied with. This really strikes home to me how much distrust there still is between the two communities even though so many years have passed. This is something that outsiders who want to see a solution really need to take on board.

I don't know how many people are aware that Sevgül Uludağ has published a book entitled "Oysters that have lost their pearls" containing interviews with both TCs and GCs who had direct experiences of events connected with the mass graves. This book has been published in both Turkish and Greek; if you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you can see a picture of the cover of the Greek language version:

I warn you: it is pretty gruesome reading.
