Here’s the “demilitarization” program Cyprus REALLY needs...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

1. Military spending should be doubled if not tripled.

2. The National Guard service should be increased to three years.

3. Mandatory military service for ALL PERMANENT CITIZENS of the RoC regardless of ethnic background.

4. Mandatory military service introduced for all women in non-combat clerical/admin roles to free up the men.

5. Commence a Short and Mid-range missile technology program with French assistance.

6. Explore the possibility of hiring special professional military forces to assist if and as required.

7. Further enhance Cyprus’ military alliance with France and other friendly countries.

Regards, GR.

The problem with this is that when southern Cyprus tried the last time to deploy missiles in the south, it very nearly sparked another war with Turkey.
It sounds - GR - that you want an active military force in Cyprus backed up by foreign military alliances, but remember that alliances are built on self-interest, so it would behoove you to think about what France would be gaining. Besides, most of the people on the forum don't want ANY foreign armed forces on the island, and I'm not just referring to Turkey. The British SBA's have also gotten some attention here, and Greece does have a military presence on the island as well.

Not so. Cyprus has plenty of missiles, both SAM and SS. What caused the problem was the acquisition of S300 missiles which can strike planes over Turkey, in other words they allowed Cyprus offensive capability reaching 200 miles inside Turkey.

The result of the priblem was that the missiles were moved to eastern Crete from where they threaten the Turkish air force over the whole of the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean. So was their removal to Crete a victory by Turkey or a major military coup by Greece and Cyprus together? I never figured that one out.

Ask a Turkish Air Force pilot...every time he steps over to Greek FIR he gets a "lock on" from Crete!
