I have one question for you Lambrinoula.

If you go out late at night for a walk in New York, do you feel safe or are you constantly looking over your shoulder?

Since I've moved to Cyprus from London, I have been out for long walks late at night, and each and every time I have felt very safe, never worried about who is lurking in the shadows.

Hi Hazza

Postby Lambrinoula » Mon May 02, 2005 7:03 pm

Hi Hazza, good question.

A lot of people are under the impression that NYC is a crazy dangerous place, which is exactly what media and movies has portrayed the city to be. In reality it is quite the contrary. I feel safer walking in New York than an other place in the world. When they say it is te city that never sleeps-- they mean it. I mean, theres ALWAYS at least 10-20 people walking on the streets around you, no matter what time it is. Obviously I dont wander off to neighborhoods known for violence like Harlem or parts of Brooklyn ad the Bronx but still, I feel pefectly safe.

I guess I have to also take into consideration that being born and raised in NYC I have developed a defnsive attitude and a strong sense of awareness when it comes to watching myself and whats going on around me. So, that probably helps too.

I'm trying to understand the difference between Paphos and cities like Lefkosia and Limmasol--- I can't wait to go and see for myself this summer. But I mean, will I be able to get around if I need to if it is late at night? I know its not like here where you can just use public transportation at any time.

I have so many questionsssssss sorry I just rambled on and on and wrote you a novel here!!! :) :) :)

Forget about public transport at night. Its non existent. In fact its pretty awful during the day as well.

If people can correct me if I am wrong on my assessment of the main 5 towns.

Paphos, nice beaches but mainly known for ancient ruins.

Limassol, quite lively, beaches pretty stoney with grey sand. I don't really like it there,

Nicosia, too hot there, too far from the beaches, just a main area for businesses.

Larnaca, pretty quiet but can get lively in the Finigudes. Quite sandy beaches and pretty central so within easy access of Limassol (40mins drive), Nicosia (30mins drive), Protaras and Ayia Napa (25mins drive).

Protaras and Ayia Napa - Very sandy beaches, probably the nicest in the South. Ayia Napa is known for its crazy club scenes in the summer and Protaras is pretty lively but with a good atmosphere. Both these places are dead in the winter with everything closed down.

i agree with hazza about the desciption of the cities but i would add that nicosia usually its quite crowded all year round(concerning night life) compared to other cities.
hazza its funny what u said about nicosia being far from the sea!!!it is true compared to other parts of the island but it reminded me of a discussion i had with a norwegian guy once.....he said he was living not very far from oslo airport.....i asked him how far exactly.....he said 8 hours by car!!!!
8 hours from nicosia driving most probably can take u to iraq if there was a bridge connecting cyprus with syria!!!

Hi Hazza

When referring to Paphos you mentioned 'ancient ruins', by this do you mean the expat Retirees? ;-) One thing which dominates Paphos is the large number of non-Cypriots there, bother residents and all year round tourists. But you are never more than 15 minutes away from villages where life has not changed greatly over the years. I was walking round Marathounta yesterday, the whole village dominated by families gathered together for the Easter souvla - it all was very appetising. I am sure if I had walked in to any garden I would have been welcomed to join in; Cyprus is like that.
